AMERICAN BROWNING A-5

OVER THE LAST YEAR, SEVERAL POSTS HAVE MENTIONED THE AMERICAN MADE BROWNING A-5 (1941-1946?). SOME HAVE SAID THESE WERE MADE BY REMINGTON, MY PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS SAY SAVAGE. I JUST HAD ANOTHER ONE IN THE SHOP AND HAD THESE OBSERVATIONS (BROWNING LOGO ON RECEIVER, OGDON ADDDRESS ON BARREL).

    Hello Mike...

    I am at work (hence I do not have my reference material handy), but from recollection, Remington made most of the American Browning A-5s (about 250,000 or so) under a specific contract with Browning/FN. Savage did make an A-5 (or copy of it), but I can not remember the specific details about it. I will look it up later today and get back to you.

    The Blue Book Of Gun Values says the American Brownings were produced by Remington in the 1940-1949 period. Even though Savage made a copy of the A5, the only place I have heard that Savage made them for Browning was on the "Mother of Misinformation" (gun discussion forums).

    I looked this up on my lunch hour...

    Remington, under contract with Browning, manufactured roughly 65,000 "American Browning" A-5s between 1940 and 1949. The 12 gauge guns have a "B" serial prefix, "A" for 16 gauge, and "C" for the 20 gauge.

    Savage manufactured the Model 720 (an A-5 clone) from 1930 - 1949 in a quantity near 300,000.

    The Remington Amercain Browning is worth about half of what a comparable Belgian (FN) is worth, and the Savage 720 is worth about 50% of what the Remington is worth.

    thanks bert. i still cann't figure out why rem. would use the sav. 720 'format' instaead of their oun m-11 'format' (screw type and sizes, ect.).
