Annie-o, the Mossberg 835 is an excellent gun for the money but is it nessesseray to get something in a 3 1/2 in magnum chambering? Are you planing to use it for wild Turkey and Waterfoul?
Another chioce if you are looking for a 3 1/2" chambering under $400.00 is the Remington 870 super mag.

Remington 870 - hands down the best shotgun for the money I have ever shot. I own Winchesters, Brownings, Mosbergs, which are all fine guns, but the gun I shoot on a regular basis (and probably paid the least for)is my 870 Wingmaster.

Remington 870 Wingmasters are very nice shotguns. Lots of decent options in terms of barrels, stocks, etc.

Are you looking for a brand new shotgun, or willing to buy used? If you don't mind buying a used gun, then you can do no better than a Winchester Model 12... and it won't be difficult finding one in your given price range. Also, the Winchester (if well cared for) will do nothing but go up in value over time... the same can not be said for a Mossberg.

Well i think everyone has a favorite pump shotgun. But i guess its all in how it feels to you. I personaly think my Ithica deer slayer 12 gauge is the best pump for me. 0 -

Ithaca 37 especially if you shoot left handed (Because it ejects down, the shell doesn't fly across your face when ejecting). Fit is so important in a shotgun that you should try any gun before you buy it. Raise it quickly to your shoulder to see how it feels and how your eye aligns with the barrel. The downside to the Ithaca is that there's not as much aftermarket stuff available for it as the Rem. and Moss. Check out the 37s available on gunbroker and their prices. 0 -

Model 37 Ithaca. When I was working on guns I never had a 37 in for anything that was not the fault of the person that owned the gun. Remingtons, Win and Mossbergs were constantly in my shop for ejector problems. I have hunted with them all but personally prefer the 37 - and it is lighter too - so easier on the body when having to carry it over any distances. But this is only my opinion...[:)] 0 -
Hello Annie-O/Debbie, some good advice above. The one thing you don't ask is what do you want the shotgun for? Do you plan to hunt or for home protection? Have you determined what gauge you want, 12,16,20,28,or 410? Being partial to old Winchesters, the Md 12 is the best, and it will hold it's value, however it's not as versatile as newer guns. for the money, I would have to say a Remington 870 Wingmaster, (Not the cheaper express) vent ribs and choke tubes are pretty much standard with the Remington, in the last 15 years or so and you can pick a nice one up for the money you want to spend. Parts are easy to get if you need them, and barrels too. Regards Dave 0 -
