    The reason your 1970s vintage feels like it is smoother is more than likely because it is cleaner (due to it being newer). If you were to conduct a very thorough cleaning (which will require some disassembly), and fresh (light) lubrication of your older 94s, you will discover that they will be at least as good, if not significantly better than the newer 94 you have. Very few people took (or take) the time to do the proper maintenance on those old Carbines simply because they are so trouble free. Unless there is truly something wrong inside one of them, no additional work on them is necessary.

    They just gotta be cleaned, lubed, and used. Thats the best way to get'em smooth.

    I also agree, I have one that was made in the 70's ('72 or '74 I think off the top of my head) but its by far the smoothest. Don't know why or what it is. Probably just been used more.
