Wedge on BP Revolvers
Okay, I know the wedge holds the barrel on--but does the farther you push the wedge in, the closer the cylinder gets?
Also, is it possible to leave the screw above the wedge "loose" so you can readily disassembly and reload--or do you have to tighten/loosen it each time? Can't find any instructions about this.

I always leave the wedge screw in just tight enough on my 1851 navy that it keeps the wedge from falling completely out. I make sure that the wedge snaps in and that the little "clip" on the other side is gripping the frame so it dosen't inadvertantly slide out. I can push it out with a finger by pressing firmly on the right hand side of the barrel but it will only slide out just far enough to remove the barrel as the screw prevents it from being completely removed.

Pardon my dumbness. I just bought my first bp revolver and it doesn't seem to have the wedge you guys are talking about.
The gun is a 1858 New Army Police. Maybe it's not supposed to have a wedge?.............or ole njretcop lost it already, haha.

On trick I found on my BP rifles, is to slightly bend and sometimes file the end slightly so it is easier to insert into the gun (without loosening anything), and with the pin slightly bent it applies different pressure depending on which way you put it in, etc.
Ya might try something like that on your revolver (as long as you can still get spares).0 -
njretcop, the 1858 remington dosen't have a barrel wedge....the barrel wedge on Colt's of various models were simply to hold the barrel to the rest of the frame through a cutout in the cylinder rod. Colt's had to do this because they had no top strap unlike the Remingtons which had a top strap so all that was required was a simple pin to hold in the cylinder and the barrel and frame were one piece. 0 -
