what does it mean when someone refers to the part being "in the white" ?

    Raw metal, not blued, parkerized or such.

    It means, literally, "unfinished". Usually this will be a shiny, metallic color, although it could mean a matte, unpolished look.

    This term distinguishes most parts from those that have been blued or plated, or finished in some other way.

    would this also mean that the part would have to be tempered
    or harden also..

    tempered/hardened is when metal is treated with high heat during the creation process. it forces molecules together making steel strong...i/e: some knife blades.

    Rlfcjf ON tempered/hardening, this is generally done during the metalurgy process and the manufacture will purchase the desired strenght metal, for example 7075-T0 is a aluminum that has not been heat treated, where a 7075-T6 would be a aluminum that came heat treated from the man. I would not expect the "white part" to need heat treated, as that should have been done before the machining to the metal to make the part. White metal as others have said is metal without a permanent finish, it might come covered in a coat of oil, or cosmoline to prevent corrosion though. Do not confuse heat treating with forging. Cast or stamped metals are not has "hard" as the same metal in almost every application as compared to a similar metal that was forged. The reason for this was already covered by bobski. Now many people, will debate guns needing to be forged, and many people will debate that it is an unneeded expense. For example Ruger and Caspian, use (in general please dont' attack me) cast frames, which saves on costs, however it's not forged metal. This could be a debate on the board in itself, or maybe I'm the only guy left that cares about metal out here, not sure, I feel I'm rambling but if you have a question about metal, or the rockwell scale, ect, post it in the general discusion board, and I'm sure you'll get lots of feed back. I can give you very, specific numbers on strenths and teach you how to break down the numbers if interested as well.
