This is going to take too much price research to answer accurately; so I'm just going to say that I really like my Browning Buckmark, and would kind of like to own a Ruger Mk II heavy barrel.

I would say, look at the Browning Buckmark. Prices are good on some models right now. Also look at Ruger Mk II, or the Ruger Single Six revolver. I've seen used models at very good prices that still shoot like new. I bought a Single Six for $100. at a pawn shop last year and it is as accurate as a new gun.

forgive me for pointing out that your mindset is wrong. this is an OPEN forum so take it with a grain of salt and maybe youll understand my point of view, which will help you in the long run. the classic american mindset is to get as much as you can for the least amount possible. this is the result of a living in a consumer based capitalist society. nothing wrong to hunt for a bargain and theres nothing wrong with best for less. but, normally in this same society there comes point where people realize that in order to achieve a goal, you have to pay a little bit more to achieve it. stock car team owners or baseball commisioners dont hire the cheapest players in order to win a world series or the daytona 500. they pay more to get more. put this in line with what youre asking us to give you. you want 1" groups and dont want to pay for it. about 90% of the 22's out there can shoot 1" groups. the question should be, how many will be doing it 20 years from now or 'every time.' the fact youre looking at a TC as your first choice tells me you might be shooting silloettes, where RF and mag feed isnt important. your question leaves the 'pros' here grabbing for the right answer because we dont know what your end result must be. why do you need 1" groups? and if its so important, why arent you going to pay for it? what kind of ammo do you need to shoot? lead? jacketed ammo? rule of thumb.......work your way back from the target. if hitting your target consistantly is the goal, choose a bullet, find a gun to shoot it, and fit the gun to the person. personally, i shoot hi standards on my firing line. the guns will outshoot any human, and, they have been for over 40 years....and they still do. 'pay a little more to get a lot more.' thats a bargain. hope this helps.

These are both mine, and they will shoot 1" at 50yds by a friend ... I can't do it except maybe on a good day, with great ammo ... off the bench using at least 1 bag ... maybe 2, one for the barrel, the other for the grip ... a scope or red dot might help ... but that's me ... the Ruger has been worked over and the Browning is box stock ... The Ruger is a bit cheaper, even after having a trigger job and some Vorqusen yada yada yada parts ... I picked up them both used, $300 for the Ruger and $400 for the Buck Mark Signature Series

I'm sorry, I guess I didn't say exactly what I intended to. I was trying to keep it short. I didn't mean I was looking for the least expensive .22 rimfire available (I thought they all shot lead bullets?), but the least expensive one that would shoot a 1" group at 50 yards. I am looking first for anything that will consistantly shoot that kind of group, with any action; auto, single, revolver, etc., then at the approximate price. Or, I can deal with finding the price, I just want accuracy. I have a Buckmark now, and have done some research on the Ruger MK II. They are both great pistols. My buckmark is somewhere near 2" at 50 yards, and Ruger could not guarantee 1" 50 yard groups. I was told by a factory rep. that the average Ruger will shoot 5/8 to 3/4 inch groups at 25 yards, with some being better, and and some worse. This is not bad, but it isn't 1" at 50. Should I be looking at a custom pistol, or is there something that will do this out of the box? Is a Thompson Contender that accurate? These are the things I really don't know, and need help with. Please let me know if I need to add more clarification, and thanks for the help you have already given me.

The Clark custom Ruger guarantees 1.25 inch groups at 50 yds; it's about $800 depending on who you get it from. I think you could save some money by picking up an older (Hamden) High Standard, but you should do some reading to make sure you don't get one with a cracked slide. They run about $550 and up for a good one. Other choices are the Baikal IZH35M, they're a much more capable gun than either the Buckmark or Ruger and run about $400. Get a newer one - the date is stamped on the side - you'll have to do less cleanup on it. You can read all about them http://izh.petebrunelli.com/
Marvel conversions for 1911 pistols are accurate, many will shoot your sub 1 inch groups. Other choices are the Pardini SP or one of the Hammerli's (SP20 or 208s if you can find one). These are not cheap.
Given you're inclined to not spending a lot on an accurate 22 pistol, I'd recommend you buy the cheapest thing you can find that you're comfortable with - and spend your money on good ammo. It makes a huge difference in 22 accuracy.

my next question is, can you shoot 1" groups at 50 yds? if a gun can shoot 5/8" at 25, why must you have 1" at 50? again, what is your goal? are you involved in a bet, bench testing, or bench pistol matches? the x bulleye of a 50 yd target is 2." and again, correct type ammo with a custom built gun for big bucks can do it, but youre gonna have to pay for it. people that want 1" groups at 50, send the ammo they want to shoot to the factory; and, smiths build guns on that bullet. or, a smith will tell the owner to use only....(blank)..... in the gun when its done for best results follow me? any old bob shay hi standard can do it. any old kart kit can. a bob hebbard gun will. my giles match hi standard does all day. i mean youre asking for 'olympic match' standards! and the guns i just mentioned can go for over 1,000,00 each. the reason im curious about if you can shoot 1" groups is if you cant, your guns may be shooting 1" groups, and you just dont know it because of poor marksmanship and no experimental data on hand to prove or disprove the results. as you can see in my intro below, im no beginner to this dilema. i teach accuracy, so im not trying to cut you down, im trying to seriously help you achieve your goal. people pay me big bucks to learn this secret. bottom line, most people cant shoot and blame the gun. or said just in a different way, most people have guns that can shoot 1/2" or 5/8" groups at 25 and just cant do it themselves. follow me? so, if your goal is to eliminate any doubt in the gun by getting a super accurate gun, so all you can blame is yourself, PAY for the best and practice your proficency without a shadow of a doubt that...its not your gun if you miss the same hole at 50. btw...ON A REAL GOOD DAY i can put them in the same hole at 25, slow fire OH. i mean ive found that DIET will effect a group! how much sleep the night before will effect a group! ive spent 8 hours a day on line shooting and found that depending on if im sitting or standing will effect a group. which lane i stand in will effect a group. how hot the gun is will effect a group. how many rounds loaded in the mag will effect a group. shadows will effect a group. wind will effect a group. and the list goes on and on. there isnt a shooter here that can say its not all true. i hope im not wasting my breath. btw...hi standard slides dont crack. the right (and sometimes left) frame rail below the slides near the feed ramp in the area of the slide release notch does. if the gun was fired with high v rounds and weak recoil springs not replaced religously, they will crack. so in conclusion, take a deep breath, put a 1,000.00 aside, and go buy a 10x hi standard or a hammereli, to hit 50yds with 1" groups, thats a gun built & ready to go, rather than building a custon gun to achieve the same thing. hope i helped. and the best part of it all.....no charge!

    Thanks again everyone!

The IZH35M at this point looks like what I asked for. I plan to research it a bit more before I decide to buy one. I am also going to do some research on the Thompson Contender. Has anyone here had any experiance with them? I realize they are a different "animal", I just thought in someones spare time they might have, well..... Perhaps when I find the pistol that will do 1" groups at 50 yards I will be able to determine if I am capable of shooting that well, but probably not before. I will use a scope, (Hey, I'm 64 and it helps me to see) and it will be used for non competitive target shooting, small game hunting, and all the other fun things one would use a .22 rimfire pistol for.
