Colt Sporter 7.62 X 39 Value
A friend of mine has one that I am interested in getting. I guess it the same as an ar15 but uses ak47 ammo? anyway, the top and bottom both match. It uses the old school rear sight adjustment and pre ban mounts. It is in great condition. What should I offer him. Thanks for your honest opinion. NK

First, I don't think that it is a good idea to make an opening offer on ANY gun; always let the seller decide how much HE thinks it's worth, and then, maybe, make a counter-offer. The odds are, he thinks it's worth more than you do, & will be insulted at just about any offer.
However, I'm not sure that I can recommend this particular rifle unless you have a relative in the Russian military who can get you free ammo. The mag body is the same as the .223, but the follower is different; correct mags are tough to find. And, in 7.62 x 39, they tend to feed poorly; you don't want a gun that won't function properly.
Personally, I wouldn't pay > $500 for the rifle, but I just wouldn't take a chance on paying any more for what could be a lemon.

Thanks for the info. I thought the russian ammo was cheaper in bulk than 5.56mm By the follower, I assume you mean the piece in the magazine that pushes the ammo up or the piece of bent metal that holds the rounds in the mag. There is a specific mag for this weapon? Does it have a history of jamming up.

The only mags that worked with this system were the USA frankenmags and they are hard to find and pricey (like $75 apiece last I saw) Funny since USA mags for any other gun will probably be junk! Anyhow, since good mags arent available I'd agree with the earlier quote on a max offer. If you're good with metal, you might be able to make your own mags, but you'll have to wait unitl the assault weapons ban sunsets next year to do that. 0
