inline muzzleloader range

Yesterday I saw a nice buck but passed on the shot. Myself I won't take a shot over 110-125 yards with my inline muzzleloader. I shoot 100 grains of 777 and a sabot bullet. How far is the effective range of these type of rifles? As always thanks for your replies.

    The range of a inline is exactly the same as the range of a sidelock (both using the exact same load). Your actual MV and BC are what determine the effective range, not what kind of lock design it has.
    With 3-50gr pellets of Pyrodex under a 240gr sabot MV is right near 2100fps. I've tipped deer over at 175yd (at that distance the bullet has almost the same velocity a 44Mag pistol has at the muzzle) with that load.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    I would say the effective range of these rifles varies on the model but 200 yards in my opinion is where I'd stop taking shots at.

    With 100 grains (which is what I shoot in both my sidelock and my inline) I'd limit it to 125-150. There is probably enough energy there, but before you shoot that far - practice, practice, practice. Know the exact point your projectile really starts falling. Out of my Rem. 700 MLS using 100 grain .44 caliber sabot it'll shoot to 125 relatively flat, then almost fall on its face. My sidelock shooting a .495 patched roundball has a smoother drop, but it starts earlier, closer to 85 yards. However, they seem to both shoot to about the same point when reaching 150 (does that make sense?).
    I'd set up pie-plates and whatever range (up to 200 yards) you can put all the shots reliably in the plate then that is your maximium effective range. Part of the distance depends also on sights, I shot one this year at 90 yards (my longest shot with a smokepole). However, that was about my maximium with open sights. Scopes aren't legal in KS during muzzleloader season but they are during rifle season. I have my open sights set at 75 yards and my removeable scope set at 125 yards.
    Just be smart and don't shoot at distances you haven't extensively practiced, especially on the rainbow trajectory of a smokepole over 100 yards.

    I killed a whitetail doe at 185yds with an inline Marlin MLS-50 and 100grs of Pyrodex and a 300gr CVA Deerslayer. If you are getting 100yd groups in 2" or under range then perhaps you can extend your range. Shot placement and range estimation are the key, along with practice at the intended range.
