Reloading Shelf Life on Primers -

Thanks to all who responded to my query on PUMA v Win. Here's one on reloading- I pulled out my reloading gear out of storage and found about 500 CCI sm pistol primers in original packaging.They have been stored indoors in a dry closet for about 12-15 years. I wouldn't consider using old powder, but how about shelf life on primers? Any danger or should I just discard on general principle? Thanks in advance. P*rick

  No problem at all... worst case they don't work. I think they will though. Even old powder is perfectly safe if it hasn't degraded, and you can tell if it has by smell.

  I've got primers and powder stored that's older than my youngest child (32). All still work just fine. If you have stored them as you say, the primers and powder should be OK. Check the powder by smelling (a sweet solvent smell is good, an arcid, bitter smell bad) and look at it under outdoor light. Normal, greyish black is good, reddish powdery look is bad. Only way to check primers is to pop a few and see if they work or not. If you have the capability, load a few in some empty cases and see if they work. Black residue comes out of barrels easily.
