spare deer rifle
In the spring I am going to have some extra play money for my hobbies.I am going to pick up a spare deer rifle in a different caliber. I already have a 243, 7mm-08, 270, and a 30-06. Any ideas on something new to consider? I don't really want anything bigger than the 06. As always thanks for your replies.

How about a 25-06?
IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.0 -
You would love a .257 Roberts and .260 Remington is not bad either!
My heros have always killed cowboys.0 -
Go with the .257 Robt's or .260 Rem. if you handload or intend to, otherwise .25-06. 0 -
need a 12 gauge fun to shoot deer with it

Have had all those recommended - cast my vote for the 25-06. Sweet round.
Keep off the Ridgeline0 -
Since you have the standard cartridges covered, I'd suggest a carbine in a big-bore round like the .44 mag (very low recoil), .444 Marlin, or the venerable 45-70.
If you meant nothing bigger than an 06 by diameter then disregard these suggestions. I took it, however, as nothing bigger recoil-wise... The 45-70 can be had in hot loads that will recoil harder than the 06, but in the standard loads it is quite a pleasure to shoot.0 -
I like the .260rem myself.
But what you really need a .30-30win. Thats like a must. Everyone must have at least one .30-30. And it has to be a lever action, either a Marlin 336, a Winchester 94, or similar. Especially if you ever plan on hunting in Texas. Everyone in Texas has at least one .30-30win crammed somewhere in the back of the gun cabinet. If you don't have a .30-30 down here people will look at you funny.0 -
257 Roberts

You're a statistic whether you want to be or not.0 -
Sounds to me like you have the rifle thing covered pretty nicely. How about taking it up a notch and try a handgun. Try out a thompson contender and you'll never look at deer hunting with a rifle in the same light.

Im with blackman, every body needs at least one 30-30 wheather you use it or not. 0 -
257 ROBERTS. A GREAT ROUND.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
I am a big fan of the 6.5X55 Swede, but I also like the 260 Remington. Then again, the 45-70 would be a hoot to shoot, and unlike anything you already have. 0 -
I suggest a Marlin Guide Gun 45/70 in stainless steel.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned a "new" short magnum,so many others are trying them.Me,I'll just stick to my favorite 308win.My .02,Bob. 0 -
I'm glad no one mentioned any Short Mags, tells me most veteran shooters not falling for the HYPE. 0 -
Hello, I will have to agree with cletus85, .308 would be my first choise.

Definately!! 30-30! Not a Marlin though, get a Winchester '94.

h.s. Are you bad mouthing my Marlin????? I think the winchester 94 30-30 STINKS. So their.[:(!][:(!] 0 -
I would recommend the 6.5X55 Swede also. The 444 Marlin is a good bit different than anything else you mentioned. Inside of 150 yards it will bring down just about anything.

Might be out of spec, but I learned to deer hunt with a Marlin 336 lever action in .35 Remington. A real brush buster. That's what I needed becuase where we hunted you could see over 50 yards. I have my own place now and use a 30.06, but that old Marlin is sighted in every year in case I need a back up.
Like in the NFL, defense is the key.0 -
Try a Tikka T3 lite in a 25-06. They feel great and the accuracy is supposed to be a 1" moa or better before they leave the factory. It is also a great deer catridge (Fast). Recoil is not bad either.

An original Winchester Model 1894 octagon barreled Rifle (pre 1936) in either 38-55 or 32-40[^]

308 (7.62X51) is the best choice I have seen mentioned. As good as a 30-06 any day in my book!!!!!!!!!!!
