"Special Assessment Tax" on Full Auto guns???

A friend of mine here in Omaha called the BATF about the steps necessary to get a full-auto gun---machine gun, if you like. The person on the other end of the line said that there was the $200 license, or whatever you want to call it, PLUS a $500 "special assessment tax". This sounds like horsecrap to me. Have any of you on this board who own machine guns ever heard of a "special assessment tax"?

    was aware of the 200.00 nfa tax but i dont have any full autos so cant tell you but sounds like a we want money tax

    the thing that scares me is that we could be living in someone else's own reality

    SOT is the Special Occupation Taxpayer fee of $500... it is for manufacturers of NFA items and does not apply to an individual transfer.

    So my friend buying the machine-gun wouldn't have to pay it? Only the $200 licensure, or fee, or whatever it's called?

    Usually it will cost $200 for the stamp and another $100 for the C3 dealer's time and trouble, and then about 6 months of your time for the entire process to work.

    Yes, your friend would need to pay the $200 tax. This is paid on each machinegun you buy.

    Dealers charge for the transfer, or you can locate a machine gun you want to buy in your own state and avoid the dealer fee. Here I pay $25 for a dealer NFA transfer.

    Paperwork takes 90 days, sometimes more.

    You need signature from #1 law enforcement officer in your jurisdiction. Chief of police, Sheriff, etc on your paperwork.

    As far as a dealer "Charge", anything less than a $100 for the
    paperwork (Done Right) for a transfer is fair.
    Naturally, if you are buying a Class III weapon from your dealer
    the "paperwork" is factored into the selling price.
    My last Class III transfer, earlier this summer: the BATF paperwork
    was done and back to my dealer in 42 days from the day he mailed it.
    Fastest he had ever had one back.
    Makes me wonder "How Much" they "Know" about me!?!?
