Receiver Ring Issue---HELP!

Got the barrel/receiver/bolt back from the smith, who redid the bolt-handle and drilled/tapped/mounted the scope-bases for me on my Swede 96 Mauser, only to find that the front scope-base is too far forward. I didn't tell him how to place the front base so the little receiver ring---that thing that holds the rear of the wooden hand-guard down---can't go back far enough to fit properly now. I took the ring off (had to cut it off, couldn't get the darned thing off any other way) and now I'm faced with the situation that I'll have to file down a bit of the wood on the rear of the hand-guard to accommodate the front scope base (no big deal,) but I need to know: What can I do now about securing the back of the hand-guard, now that I don't have the receiver-ring, and even if I had one, wouldn't fit properly because of the front scope-base?

HELP!

Please tell me I didn't reduce my rifle to a collection of expensive parts!!!!

    WHEN SPORTERISING A MILITARY RIFLE LIKE THIS MOST PEOPLE JUST TAKE OFF AND THROUGH AWAY THE HAND GUARD/BAYONET LUG/ AND CUT THE STOCK OFF JUST IN BACK OF THE BARREL BAND. YOUR SMITH PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW YOU WANTED TO LEAVE THESE PARTS ON. IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE TO ALTER THE FRONT SCOPE MOUNT TO HOLD THE HAND GUARD ON, OTHERWISE YOUR SOL.

    Okay.....Not too encouraging, but truthful, and I value that in a sincere reply. Let's try THIS then:

    Where can I get a REPLACEMENT handguard ring? I looked on the 'Net under "Swede Mauser Parts" but came up blank. Anyone know?

    You might be able to grind away the bottom of the front base enough to clear the handguard.

    After carefully examining the front scope-base, I (equally carefully) filed a small notch in the wood of the rear of the hand-guard that fits neatly along the sides of the scope-base. The base is a Weaver, which means it narrows going toward the bottom. I removed the front base, and filed the wood until it just fit, then remounted the scope-base. The result was a delightfully snug fit, where the rear of the handguard coudln't go up, or back, or sideways, or forward (once I put the barrel-band back on. So I've got the scope-base itself firmly holding down the rear of the hand-guard!

    Whew....Dodged a bullet THAT time. But I've learned something today, as they say in South Park: Next time I have any drilling/tapping/mounting done, I'm sending the WHOLE FREAKIN' RIFLE up to the smith SO THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!
