I recently bought a P85 9mm from a friend who had just gotten the safty up grade from ruger on this gun. After cocking the gun the trigger goes all the way to the back and the hammer will not fall, release the trigger and on the second pull and it functions normally. Any Suggestions?

Yes, but you won't like it......send it back to the factory with instructions to fix it so it will fire on the first trigger pull after the safety is released. If they can't or won't do it, then sell it. Can you imagine having to fool around with it as-is when "the chips are down"?

Odd way to safety upgrade a gun... pull trigger, no bang.
    I suppose, technically, it's "safer".
Send it back to the factory for a fix, or if you want the gun back sooner, send it to a local gunsmith for fixing.

Sounds as if the sear/disconnector is sticking. Make sure there is at least some oil in that area. If you look on the right side just below the slide you'll see a piece that moves back and forth when you pull the trigger, insure that there isn't anything that is preventing it from moving as it should. It sounds like it isn't moving correctly on the first pull, but it is on the second. It could be bent or there might be something in there that is keeping it from moving as it should.
