Colt's 45, still alive?
Just browsing through all the 45 topics and Colt is hardly ever brought up unless there is a specific question regarding them. Is everyone staying away from them for one reason or another? Reason I ask is because I am looking for a full size 1911 and dont want to spend 650-700 for a standard springfield or kimber. I can get a new colt series 80 for around 500. Any comments would be appreciated.

...you would think everything that could be said about the 1911 has been covered by now....but I continually find new information. Learned a great deal from reading Judge Colts posts on the topic. You could check http://www.1911forum.com/forums/ if you want more info on them.
For most people a $500 1911 is like buying a car with no frills....leaves you plenty of room for add-ons, accessories, and custom work. The opportunity to personalize is limitless.
I've got two 1911's....for some reason that doesn't seem enough. Saving up for a Wilson Combat Super Grade, maybe that will satisfy the craving.0 -

What got Kimber in the game, and kept them there (besides quality) is offering the most common custom options on their standard pistol ... You will easily spend the differece up grading a standard Colt to what a basic Kimber costs ... without the frustration.

Kimber, one Super Grade is hard enough on the wallet....but I did get a chance to look over a S&W 500 the other day for my other hand [;)] 0 -
You're kidding, right jjce11?[;)]Seems like about 25% of the new threads (perhaps a slight exaggeration)involve the 1911-type pistol or the .45 ACP cartridge. Go back through the Forum's archives and you'll find out almost everything you ever wanted to know about .45s.

Thanks all. What I was refering to was Colt as a brand, not the 1911 style. I thought it unusual that when 1911's are brought up no one was giving praise or not to Colt. Well regarldless next time I see a mil spec 1911, Springfield or Colt I think I will go pick one up. Thanks everyone.[:p] 0 -
So can you or can you not buy a Series 80 for $500? If you can as you imply, why the statement: "Well regarldless next time I see a mil spec 1911, Springfield or Colt I think I will go pick one up." I thought you had one located for $500, which is a great deal, yet that statement seems to indicate you really do not have one spotted for $500. Which is it?
As far as Colt the company, yes, it is still alive, but the product line is small and production is small. There have been major advances in quality, so the new Colts are of very high quality. Rumors continue about reintroductions and the like, but I doubt it for a while, if ever.
Kimber has been the leader in the non-boutique 1911-pattern pistols, and will continue in that role for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, I am still partial to Colts. Two years ago, I gave my secretary a Colt Gold Cup stainless for a Christmas bonus and it was near perfect. The current ones are said to be even better. Except for an ambidextrous safety kit, I would not do anything to a new Colt. I would shoot it as is. When you pass it on to your grandchildren, the Colt will be worth a lot more than the clones.
If you do not want the new Series 80 for only $500, others here probably would. Why not let them know where it is?0 -
I thought you were refering to .45lc. I'm fixin' to get me a Taurus snubnose in such caliber! It's still has great stopping power after all these years!

well the springfield is offered currently for 519, as low as 479 when it goes on sale. The only thing though I was looking for Colt as the brand goes. But I did get a chance to handle the Springfield today and everything felt tight. I did notice that the frame was made in brazil as others have stated in the past but it still looks like it is well made. 0 -
In my opinion, Colt is the brand to buy. A lot has been said about the 1911 and it's clones but Colt is No1 and always will be.
Just look at all the auctions and see what the prices are compared to Springfield etc... I know the Kimbers and some other models are more expensive and if you like the features and options they offer go for it. But, in years to come, my bet is on the value of a Colt brand gun, I have several that I bought years ago for a lot of money (or so I thought) and I see what they are worth now and I am quite happy.
Some magazines say that the original Colt 1911 is referred to as John Brownings design and that is correct but Colt is the first maker of the 1911 and many are still shooting just fine today almost 100 years later!
The very first .45 auto was the model 1905 by Colt and mine still shoots great!
Top notch guns, if you are looking for price and just to keep and shoot and then sell it in a little while, buy a clone. If you love guns and want to keep it to hand it down to your heirs then buy a Colt and leave them something worth while.
