Bob,,, BH is correct, it is the same as what the civilians call .308.
Its just the millimeter designation. The .223 rem rifle round is the same as the 5.56mm M-16 rifle ammo used by the military.

The 7.62mm is the same as .30 cal, and the 51mm is the length of the loaded round.

Close, 51mm is the nominal case length (not the oal of a loaded cartridge)

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

7.62X51 is the original NATO designation for the round that we in the U.S. commonly know as the .308 Winchester. There are some subtle differences in military and sporting rounds, and true Mil-Spec 7.62X51 ammo may not chamber in non-military rifles. Sporting rifles usually have shorter chamber throats than the military rifle chambers. Mil-spec ammo also uses harder primer cups to reduce the risk of slam firing in full auto weapons. This can cause misfires in some sporters......

here is my 2 pennies about the 7.62 responce. in the case of 7.62x39 the bullet diameter is .311 which is the same as the .32 caliber.
