Buying a Gun As A Present

HAIRY
I'm planning on buying a Ruger 22 pistol for my son who lives in VA (I live in FL). I also plan on using Gunbroker to find it, and then to pay for it, with the FFL shipping it to my son's FFL. Anyone see any problems with this scenario?[:)]

    Bottom line is FFL to FFL to Consumer. His state won't get the tax, but tax avoidance is not illegal.

    im in the same postion as you. i just bought a gun on line for my wife in va, from penn, from my conn computer. i mailed off payment from conn, i put a va. ffl in touch with the penn seller. they are talking and exchanging ffls. the guns going to va. and the wife will sign for it as hers. i bought it. its hers. batf doesnt care. im clean, shes clean. its all in the family, much like your situation. the going rate for a va. transfer is 30.00 +/- 5.00. regardless if its your son, if he's of legal age, he will have to fill out a batf form to accept it in va., just like anyone else. the gun then becomes 'registered to him, in va.' follow me? if he's just a kid, a ffl dealer will not transfer a gun to a kid! if you plan on having an adult sign for it, it should be discussed before shipping to ensure youre not breaking any state or local laws on either end. the legal clean adult goes thru the process. a legal adult must sign for it in his stead and the gun becomes the responsibilty of the adult. in the eyes of the batf, the gun is the legal adults. if the adult turns around and gives it to the underaged kid, the adult is breaking va. and federal law. all other ffls please chime in and ensure im straight on this.

    It was actually cheaper and easier to contact a dealer in VA and pre-pay for the gun. My son will complete the paperwork when he goes to get it (he knows about the 3-day waiting period).

    i see no problem with it but please remember as pointed out gifts are taxable and must be declared when filing federal income tax .................[:D][8D][:D]

    gifts are taxable... I believe the first $10,000.00 of a gift in one year to a family member is exempt...

    If the gun is worth more than $10,000.00, please adopt me and consider a nice gift for me this Christmas, too.

    No problem, Hairy. I am in IN, bought a gun from an Omaha dealer, and had it sent to a FL dealer. It was a present for a friend in Tampa. He went through the background check and picked it up.
