We use Federal Hi-shok 115 JHP out of the 9mm.

Greg, It varies from dept to dept. My dept uses the 147 gr Win SXT, and prior to that the Blk Talon 147 gr.

We can also carry .40 and .45 cal.

I was just reading a recent column by Massad Ayoob and he made the wise recommendation that a civilian find out what his local PD uses and then do likewise. This can be used to eliminate malicious intent if you ever found yourself at the wrong end of a criminal or civil trial.

If you don't have access to this information, you can't go wrong with Gold Dots, Hydra Shoks or Golden Sabers should do the job.

Actually, the trend toward issuing the 9mmP as a primary handgun for law enforcment use is fading. Larger calibers, like the .40 or .45 are making a comeback with LEO's after years of problems with the smaller round.

But in answer to your question, my agency issues Winchester 115 gr. +P+ for officer's back-up/off duty weapons.

Wiley Clapp has an article in the latest Guns & Ammo magazine concerning the changes made in 9mm ammo since the days of the "wonder nines". Wiley says that most professionals staying with 9mm now use 124 gr HP or 147 gr factory loads, since these outperform the lighter weight bullets.

We carry .40's but my friend works for the FBI and they use Gold Dot in their mp5's.
