Ackley Improvement?

H.S. 10-X
Who can tell me more about this. From what I can tell it seems to be a relatively easy way to improve some calibers. The 30-30 will gain 12.9% velocity with 150gr bullets. Who has had this done to their rifle, and with what calibers, and with what results?

    Doing a search with your browser will yield a fair amount of information. I fail to see the benefit to the 30-30 since there are already factory cartridges that achieve this, but it is fun to experiment and to each thier own. [:)]

    Yep!! Was it you that gave me the link? Anyway it said that the 30-30 had the 5th best results of all the catriges tested.

    Yep... I think one of the best Ackley attributes is that it has lower recoil for the velocity achieved, and longer case life. Some of the cartridges such as the 6mm AI, there is nothing out there that'll keep up with it in that caliber.

    I just had a thought, if you were to reload for an A.I. caliber, wouldn't you have to have special dies?

    Those probablly aren't easy to find though. Is there a certain company that specializes in them?

    Like I said, I don't reload. However, I'd think that one of the major manufacturors (Lee, Hornady, RCBS, etc) would make 'em.

    There's a seller here on GB selling books on the Ackley (I don't know him, just found it on a search) if you're serious about learning about it.

    I put those on my watch list. I'll do some more research on my own. But I am intrigued by this method of improving a caliber. If I do anything first it will be with a 30-30. I already reload for that. Then I may work from there. OOOH? What about a .300rem ultra mag AI?

    Those books (Ackley handbooks) are available from Brownells for $38.90/set and Sinclair's for $37.50/set, both plus shipping.

    Both also have the books 'Wildcats I & II' from Wolfe Publishing which contain huge amounts of information on Ackley wildcats and lots of others.

    Dies for Ackley cartridges are availble from all of the major manufacturers: Redding, RCBS, Forster, Lee and Wilson. They all have their own websites and are available from the leading reloding suppliers.

    I've done probably 50-60 Ackley barrels and I still find that I like them for several calibers. But there are limits and I think that maybe the 300 RUM is one of them. There are a couple of advantages in the 300 RUM AI but not much. You are already at the top of the case capacity range for most cartridges and bores. You should go to www.longrangehunting.com and check through the threads there with a search for the 300 RUM and the the Improved version, the 300 Tomahawk. There is lots of discussion regarding improving cartridges and reloading for them.
