444 Marlin suggestions
Well, I finally found a GOOD used Marlin 444SS last week. I have a few questions about it....(1)What effective range can I expect from this gun with Rem. 240gr. SP? (2)What size shot groups would be considered good for this particular gun/ammo? (3)At what distance should I sight it in at? Any other comments/suggestions???? Thanks!!

On my Marlin .444, I sighted it in at 75 yards since that was about the maximium range I shot with it, but it'd easily shoot double that. For me, if I'm out of the woods I use my .300 win instead. With mine, open sights I could get 2 1/2" groups, but I'd say it'd be half that with a scope.
The .444 Marlin is a nice "compromise" round, it isn't quite as hard-kicking as a 45-70, yet gives significant benefits over the .44 magnum out of a carbine. I had to sell mine a few years ago to pay medical bills, but it was a good gun and good cartridge. I'd sure like it if Marlin would come out with a stainless/synthetic version...0 -
I shot mine 2 weekends ago and got 1.5" groups @ 100 yards with Remington 240 grain and some 265 grain handloads with a 3-9X scope. It is much easier shooting than my 45-70 or 450. I think it is a great gun out to about 150 yards and has great lines. 0 -
Open sights, 240gr federals, bench shooting at a 4x4, 3" groups @ 100yds.
Entry hole about 1/2" round, exits 3" diameter & knocking out 1.5" depth of the wood. Great 100yd heavy brush gun.

Considering that in creedmore matches of the turn of the century, black powder 45-70's made 1000yard shots at matches, I consider the 444marlin to have quite an effective range depending on what your doing with it. For all practical purposes, and do to the rifle's (not the cartridge's) limitations, I'd give an effective range of anything large within 200yards, given your a good rifleman. I'd sight the rifle in at 100 yards, but know shot placement well within that, where most of your shots will probably be. Just generally. 0
