leupold rings?
My model 70 winchester came with leupold bases and rings. I just bought a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5x10x40 scope to mount on it. The scope bell is about 5/16 in. up off the barrel so I think I need lower rings but I don't know if my rings are low, med., or high. I see leupold rings are .900 high, .770 med., and .650 low. From what point to what point are these measurements taken? Are these measurements inches or metric? How far should the bell of the scope be off the barrel ideally? Please give me some info so I can get my scope mounted correctly. Thanks

I'm just giving you a fairly educated guess, so take it accordingly...
They should be measured in S.A.E. (inches), the .900 should be nearly an inch high, the .650's will be over half (around 9/16").

The scope should be mounted as low as possible, but save just enough room to put on scope covers if desired, and also enough room to slip a patch under it so you can clean and oil under it. Most of my guns have probably 1/8" gap left after putting on my scope covers (about 1/4" without it).
Depending on the barrel contour of your rifle, it'll make a difference on which one you get. Most likely the standard low rings will work fine. Make sure also that you get the right size, if memory serves that scope is a 1" scope. I've seen people forget about the 30mm maintube scopes (or think that refers to the lenses).

Industry doesn't have a uniform height standard. So each maker will have different dimensions. Remember, not all rings are the same design.
Ring heights are measured from the base top/rings bottom, to the bottom of the ring saddle. That will be the 6 'O clock position of the ring circle/bottom of the scope.
Your scope will set lower with any medium ring. However, always try to make the ring height match your body (neck/face)style for better "fit". So, if a high 'fits' better, it's better for you.
Also, if using a high recoiling rig like big bore magnums, or ultra light rifles, recoil will be greater. Try then if it fits you, to use a lower ring height. Felt Recoil will be reduced.

Also, watch our for Leupolds recommendations if you use flip up lens covers like Butler Creek's. Leupold figures the tolerances very closely, and on my Styer, the bolt handle will strip off a flip up cover without touching the scope.
