Rifle Trigger Adjustment

I have a Winchester Mod. 70 (1970) .270 which has an adjustable trigger. I assume the trigger is still at the factory setting, somewhere around 6 lbs. (?). I would like to adjust it down to around 2.5 - 3 lbs., however a gunsmith advised me against less than 3 1/2 lbs. Am I OK hunting with this rifle with a trigger-pull around 2 1/2 lbs.? Is this possible with a Win. Mod. 70? Is this too light?

  The Gunsmith is correct The reason is #1 safety, also if you try and go lower, the trigger assembly my not work correctly. I would suggest a Jewel or Canjar trigger, very high quality and you can also buy them in differant adjustable pull weights 2oz to 4lbs etc.
  
  My hunting rifles are set at aprox. 3 1/2 to 4 pounds beacuse if I have gloves on, I like to feel the trigger or if I drop the rifle I don't need to worrie about an AD. However my Varmint guns have 3 to 5oz triggers only beacuse, 1 aid in accuracy in very long shots. 2 the saftey will work at that level and the triggers are designed to be adjusted that low. 3 I am usually stationary not walking around with it.[:D]
  
  I am not sure how far you can go realistcly with a Mod 70 trigger

  As FrancF said, don't go to low. I keep my Canjar set to 3 3/4 lb, BUT I have eliminated the creep and overtravel, which is what makes most triggers feel so bad.
  Take your gunsmiths advise, he has both yours, and his, safety in mind. Have him eliminate the creep and overtravel, while keeping the trigger pull itself in the 3 1/4 - 3 3/4 lb range.

  I do not know about the adjustability of the 70 triggers, but for hunting I have no triggers set below 3.5 lb. It is just not safe to have a hunting rifle (deer etc.) set lower, and unless you are a bench rester or a varmint shooter it will feel enough like a hair trigger at that pull.
