First Carry?
I am trying to decide what pistol I should buy. I am 6'1 205LBS and it is not likly that I will have to actually use this pistol on anyone. I want a high quality pistol that I can use as a daily carry and shoot at the range. I like the Sig 229, Glock 23/17. I was thinking about a 40SW or a 9MM but I would like advice on that too. I want to spend no more then 600$
Also whats this I hear about a new pistol that will be "Like a GLOCK" only better? 9MM and like a model 17? Mabye its just a rumor.

I like the Sig in 40. You may also want to look at the HK USP. This should fit your price range. 0 -
You did not say if the piece was to be carried concealed or not. I'm a bit larger than you, and I find it hard to carry a full sized auto on a day to day basis concealed. Most full sized combat autos are easier carried in a holster outside the pants or jacket. I'll probably catch flack from some but you asked for an opinon and this is mine.
The gun that is carried all day every day is more likley to be there if you ever need it. So, if you run to the corner quicky mart for a soda and do not plan on being out for more then 5 min. and think I'll just leave ol thunder in the safe because it is to much trouble to put on and take off for such a short trip, that is the day the local bum is hard up for his fix and is robbing the quick mart and has you penned up against the soda display, with a rusty screwdriver at your throat, demanding your wallet. (that you left at home next to ol thunder). So having said that. I would recomend a small concealable auto or revolver of at least 9mm/38spl. cal. S&W makes a fine line of light weight revolvers and autos. As do other makers. And as always read every thing you can get your hands on reguarding self defence. And if possible take some kind of training. It is money well spent. Hope this helps and Good Luck.

queeksdraw - you said it all! If one is going to get a CCW and carry SOMETIMES, you better carry ALL the time. Get a firearm that you will ALWAYS carry, like QD suggests. After that, you can add to your "carry" collection, with multiple weapons for different situations.
I carry a tiny .32 all the time. For increased threat levels, I add more guns to that basic one.
By the way, when you pick your weapon - shoot a lot.

You will get twenty opinions. I have ... maybe eight "favorite" pieces I'd want for carry.
I have not seen that Sig, but the first thing that came to mind is the S&W 410S. It's available in black also, but I like the stainless. It's doesn't fit my hand right, but it might be perfect for you. I believe it to ba a bit slimmer than the P229.

Look at the Para CCW745 also. It is a little higher than your range ... $720 on-line, delivered to your FFL, but one fine shooting piece.0 -
A quality holster makes it easier to CC. Spend the money and get a good quailty holster and you will find yourself carrying all the time. My CC holsters come from Wild Bill's Concealment Holsters. Great products no matter which one you choose.

SUNRIVER, in reply to your question about the ease of carrying a SIG 229, that is my weapon of choice & has been for several years. I have both the .40 & .357 barrels but personally prefer the .357. The holster I use is the Bianchi #17550. I am 6'1", 205lbs and this is an excellent combination for me. 0 -
I'm a big fan of S&W's light weight revolvers for CC. As a former police officer, I always carried a S&W Model 37 Airweight--a super light, small weapon with plenty of punch. Pick a quality holster; mine is a Bianchi "pancake" holster. It's a nice CC rig.
Keep in mind that the Airweight isn't a lot of fun to shoot; that's not what it's designed for. Become and maintain your proficiency with it and it is a very nice CC weapon.
If you prefer a semi auto, Sig makes a .380 (I think it's the Sig P232) that is an engineered masterpiece. It's a bit heavier than the Airweight and doesn't pack quite the punch of a .38, but it's very well made weapon.

Between the two you mentioned I would select the Sig. The 40 is much better in my opinion than the 9mm. The truth of the matter is bullet placement is way more important than calibur. If you practice practice practice ither will do you well. My 2 cents. [8D]

THE SIG P-232 IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE.
BUT THE P-239 IN 40S&W MIGHT BE THE TICKET, ALTHOUGH IT IS ONE HEAVY CHUNK OF STEEL.

I see you have gotten everyone's attention on this one.Here's my 2 cents Im 6'5 and 270lbs I can conceal any size handgun by simply leaveing my shirt un tucked.The Sig P-229 in .357 sig would be my no.1 choice,then one of the Glock Models.Whats most important is what you feel confident with and feels good to you.Good Luck!!
