Remington Model 31tc ??

I just bought a remington 31tc 12guage pump.
When fired chamber opens up about half
way, is this normal on this model.
Any help appreciated. Thanks trapman69

    Does the action lock function when dry-firing? In other words, when you cycle the action and then NOT snap the gun, do you have to press the action lock release to retract the forend?

    If i do as you describe,i have to press the action lock to
    release. This is what has me confused.

    With the gun unloaded and cocked, hold it vertically (muzzle up). Push the action lock release and see if the forend comes down. It probably will.

    Most likely, what you are experiencing is the result of you holding on to the forend during recoil.

    Just for safety's sake, though, have a gunsmith check to be sure the locking bolt is engaging the receiver as it should.

    c.g.smith is correct in everything he said. with that in mind, do the same check again with a spent shell in the chamber. hold it straight up, hold the forearm to the rear with a manly pressure and see if it unlocks before you pull the trigger. (in other words, try to shuck the gun withou activating the chamber release button.) hopefully, it wont open. then pull the trigger on the spent shell. if it unlocks, all is well and the reason its 1/2 open is because youre pulling the gun into your shoulder properly. as all smiths know, remingtons are the opposite of winchesters. winchesters require a forward motion to unlock the forearm after firing. it was determined by winchester designers that most shotgun shooters are pulling the gun into the shoulder enough to hold the gun steady for a shot and when recoil came, they were actually keeping the arm steady as a rock and the motion of the gun recoiling pushed their hands forward to unlock the release as the gun went backwards. remington was of the opposite theory. they figured pulling back tight was a perfect set up to cycle the gun faster. remember, you have a tournament grade gun built to do everything fast. 31 tc's were great guns except for the single action rod on the forearm and small trigger guard. as much praise that has gone to winchester, i can say in my experience, a remington cycles faster. enjoy it and let me know what happened. btw...still have a g.smith check it out for peace of mind.

    Thanks cg.smith and bobski for your help
    I tried holding gun up and pushing action lock forearm doesn't move.
    I then tried putting a spent hull in breach and with all my might i
    couldn't get to open. I then took out side and shot without holding
    on to forearm it still opened but just a crack. Will take to G>SMITH
    and have him check it out but thanks to you guys i feel that the
    gun is operating as it should. Action is very tight and seems to
    have seen little use.
