Winchester 94...pre 64
I have a chance to buy a Winchster 94 lever action 30/30 pre 1964 in excellent condition for $225.
I hear you all talking about pre 64 Wincherter 94's all the time.
Should I Jump on it?

Nope, I was going for the exceptional deal if there was one to be had.
It just seems like everybody is always talking about this gun and thought I was coming upon a deal I just can't refuse.

Just how much "pre-64" is it[?] It does make a considerable difference in the value department. At $225 for an "excellent" condition pre-64, you can't go wrong. The post-war 94s in excellent condtion are worth $400 - $450 minimum, so you would be at least doubling your money if you bought it. I know I wouldn't hesitate at that price[:)]

My understanding is that the only Pre-64 Winchesters that have added value, are Model 70s. These are the only Winchester weapons that had a cost-reduction redesign in '63, for the '64 model year. This resulted in Model 70s that were less feature rich.
This is what I've read/heard... nothing I can say first hand.

Not true... all of the "older" Models in production suffered the same fate... most notably, the Model 94.

If you buy the pre-64 Winchester for $225 you will be making a good deal. You should be able to realize a profit any time you decide to sell it.

1. pre-64 is now being applied to `94 rifles. it denotes a levergun actualy made by WINCHESTER, not some other company or liscensee. it most definitly adds to the value and collectability. many pricing guides and referance works are know making the distinction between pre and post 64 models in there current editions.
2. the onset of increased popularity in SASS and COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING have drivin up the demand for these guns, and there has been a corresponding spike / increase in price. this is readily apparent in the prices realized here on GB, at GUNSHOWS, and reflected in the rise in price of the value of these guns as listed / quoted in the major pricing / collecting guides.
3. caliber, BBL length, condition, DOM, lever type, sights, etc... all affect value. cartidges once considered obsolete, or undesirable are now back in production, and brass, dies, and loading data are easily acssesed. prices that were once lowered due to an "undesirable cartridge" in older editions / out of date referance works are in many cases no longer relevant, and do not reflect correctly the current values / demand.
4. for instance: a pre-64 (mid 20`s) 20" BBL / no ring / inland-eastern carbine in .32 winchester special is worth around $1000.00. this is a sharp increase in price and demand from 5 years ago.
5. even guns in rough shape are selling for surprising prices, as the COWBOY ACTION SHOOTERS are buying up the basket cases and restoring them.
you probably are getting a terrific deal. i own several, and my research, and purchase of referance and research material have yielded information i was not aware of. best regards, mike.
