Dimention difference ???
Is there any difference in the case dimentions between the .45-70 govt. and the Marlin .450 other than the fact that the Marlin has a belt? I.E case oal, i.d., o.d., rim. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there are slight differences between the cases besides the belt on the .450 Marlin. Base head size on the 45-70 is .608", the .405 has .532". Case diameter just ahead of the belt on the .405 is .5121", the 45-70 is .504". Diameter at the case mouth is .408" on the 45-70 and .4808 on the .450. Overall case length on the 45-70 is 2.105" and 2.100" for the .450. Capacity wise, the older 45-70 has just slightly more space, due to the reinforced web of the .450. A 45-70 chambering in a modern bolt action or single action rifle can out perform the .450 as far as velocity. Rifles chambered for the .450 are able to withstand higher pressures than the older 45-70 trapdoor and leverguns. The newer lever action 45-70's will be on par with the .450.
The Lyman 48th edition reloading handbook was used for these comparisons.

Thanks for the info kdub. I have a Ruger #3 chambered in .45-70 and am concidering re-barreling it to .38-56 which is the .45-70 necked down to .375, and was wondering if there would be any advantage in using the .450 Marlin case instead of the .45-70. Evidently not, so I will stick with the origional chambering for the .38-56.

That should be a fine combination, Vet -
Your #3 will certainly hold up to what you want to do. Loading spitzer bullets should give you lots of energy and velocity.
