It is a very safe weapon. It is the same as a semiauto bolt except it is manual.
The straight pulls scare a lot of people, but once you learn the mechanics of it, you will have no fear of it.
The Garand, the AR15, and a bunch of others work with the rotating bolt (head on some) it's just that they use gas or recoil to rotate whereas the Steyr is manual.

I pretty much agree with p3skyking, and own several of these myself. If you watch one of these actions open and close you might wonder how it is locking and unlocking, because the bolt head is cammed into position inside the receiver ring and you have to observe closely to see anything happening. But the bolt was designed in such a manner that there is an internal bolt that cams inside the outside body that you observe to slide backward and forward, and the actual lock-up is quite secure. Yes, the rear sights are adjustable for elevation. At the present time ammunition is mostly (1) corrosive, berdan-primed, 65 year old military surplus, or (2) handloaded. One reference shows the 206 gr. Military ball-type bullet to exit the muzzle at 2300 fps with 45 gr. of IMR 3031. This is about to change though--the reloading specialist company of Graf & Sons is about to offer both loaded ammo and reloadable brass by the end of this year. In the past it has been difficult to obtain bullets of the proper diameter and reloadable brass, but soon it should become easier.

If yours has agood bore it would make a fine deer gun. A lot of people have swaged .338 bullets with good effect but as said, grafs will come out with the proper ones soon.
