Colt SSA Grip Question

I hate to show my ignorance but...

Do all the Colt SSA revolvers use a 2 piece grip? I have a clone. I usually don't buy clones but this one is made by Hammerli so I made an exception. The problem is that the walnut grip is damaged and I would like to replace it. This is a one piece grip and is retained by the backstrap. I thought I could just buy a Colt grip and everything would be fine. Looks like I thought wrong!

  The original SAA and its percussion predecessors had one piece walnut grips. Take out the top two screws alongside the hammer and the screw at the base of the grip and the grip should come off with the backstrap.
  If you are lucky, you will find a pinhole that matches the holes in the bases of replacement grips. If not, you could either have a hole drilled or buy a one piece blank from Dixie Gun Works and do some whittling.

  Even SSA grips made by Colt have to be hand fitted to the guns, as Colt makes them oversize due to slight variations of the frames. So, V35's advice sounds like the best approach; you aren't going to find exact replacements anywhere, except maybe by sheer luck.

  Thanks for the reply guys. This is good news. I have never seen a Colt SSA except in pictures on GB. They look to have 2 piece grips locked together with a screw between them like a 1911. I guess this is not always the case. My grips are secured just as you say v35. I now know from what you said that this is the norm. There is a fellow in southern IN (collisnscraftgrips.com) that makes some beautiful grips. My fear was that what I needed would be a special custom job. Out of Jeff's price range! I think now that this will work out.
