Wow, thank you for the fast reply :)
Honey, I put that baby back in the box as soon as I read your reply LOL. There is just something about it that makes you want to hold it.

I did a quick search on the net and found that the original Red Ryder was introduced as the 1938. It was discontinued in '54, but reintroduced in '72. It became the 1938A in '79 when the design was modified and a manual safety added. In '80 the safety design was changed and it became the 1938B.

The Red Ryder logo was moved from the left side to the right side, I believe, in '54--so yours is at least that old. I say give the bb gun to your son when he gets older and appreciates a "collector" piece, and buy him a $24.95 to learn with.

Hey Southern- The Model you have was first sold in 1988 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Red Ryder. It is identifiable by the medallion on the right side, and the saddlering with leather. If you take a look at the"trapdoor" you'll see its plastic. Also on the left side of the bbl will be Daisies address with a zip code. While it will make a memorable keepsake for your son, I doubt the value will be great as a collectable . I agree though, keep it NIB and buy him a shooter-Thats what I did for my girls in 88.

I'd save it (in the box of course) and pass it on to him when he's old enough to appreciate a "collector" gun.

In the meantime, you can get him a new one here: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=104505

That, and a video of "A Christmas Story" under the tree, would make just about the neatest Christmas present any young boy could have!

Thanks all of you for the info and replies. I just wanted to let you know that the problem was solved this morning!!!! The little old lady from the store called and said that she decided to snoop around up in the attic and see what else her husband had tucked away and you will not believe this.
YES! She found another one. And she called us (I guess she got my number off of the check I wrote out to her) and asked us if we wanted it! So now our boy gets one and hubby and me get to fight over the other one! We're like two kids over the last piece of candy..."IT'S MINE!" :)

    MERRY CHRISTMAS YA'LL

(yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause)
