deer rifle setup
After this deer season I am going to go with a new setup. The rifle will be a remington model 700 mountain rifle in 7mm-08 caliber. I will top it with a Leupold vx-111 3x9x40 scope. I have a rifle in this caliber and I love it for what I am going to do with it. The scope is the best I will be able to afford by next year. Of course, it will be a few months before I am able to buy this setup. Anyway what do you guys(and girls) think? Should this be a good match and will it serve my purpose? I will not have a shot over 350 yards and most (90%+) will be under 150 yards.As always thanks for your replies.

I think most people in this forum will tell you: It be AWFUL hard to go wrong with a Remington. I think the two of you will be very happy together. 0 -
I am less impressed with Remington in recent years, but still a good choice. Scope is also a good one, but do take a look at the Burris scopes.

I'm not crazy about the Rem 700 since I like a the bolt to be locked down, but it is a thoroughly well tested product that will serve you well for many years.
What prompted my response was the caliber, the 7mm-08 is an outstanding versatile performer, possibly the best mid-action round. I have a Sako A2 in 7mm-08 an like it. Easy on the shoulder and enough downrange thump for medium game that fits in a mid-length action.
Now go get a set of medium Warne mounts. They mount on Weaver bases and are a vertical split ring with 4 heavy socket screws. They will add nice touch to good rig. Don't go with the goofy setup that has the rear windage screws, this is grossly outdated and unnecessary. Why not have BOTH front and rear ring clamp the scope 100%? I believe Cabelas and many others sell them. Good luck.0 -
Except for the triggers, I like Ruger 77 MK II's, and I have replaced the triggers on mine with Timney's. Most of my other rifles are older, and it did not sound like he was buying used. I also like Steyers (model 96 SBS), but they are pretty spendy, and I would rather see him go for a good, rather than a cheap scope. Savages also have a top reputation for accuracy that is well earned, though they are pretty plain.

Mounts: hard to do better than Talley mounts and rings. For scopes, look at Burris, Leupold, Nikon. All close, but in that order.

I think that if you are actually looking at 350+ yard shots, you might reconsider the caliber.
I'm a big 7X57 fan, but I think there are better rounds for 300+ yard shots.
