refinishing laminated stocks

I wish to reduce and refinish a Ruger laminated stock and would appreciate any advice. Will the TruOil refinishing process work on these? Will a stain be needed? (Its a gray laminated stock) Can it be sanded like regular wood stocks?

    CountryGunsmith thanks for the answers to dannej's questions. I have a Ruger lamented stock that I need to take some nicks out of and was wondering about the sanding issue myself. My stock is the dark brown/black lamenate that Ruger only used a year or 2 in 1986/87 or so. The said that Mr. Ruger did not like it so they went to a lighter version. I love mine and was wanting to refinish it but was afraid to due to the sanding issue. Mine is a M77 in 270 that was a gift from the ol lady in 1986 so it does have some senamental value to me. dannej, excellent question![;)]

    I've done a lot of stock refinishing, and the best way to begin, is to get all of the old finish off. That can be done by either sanding, or if the finish is really rough, and the wood underneath needs quite a bit of attention, you can strip it with paint stripper. But be careful with the stripper on a laminated stock, if left on too long, it can attack the laminate.
    After the finish has been removed, finish sand with 220 wet-or-dry sand paper, this will keep the grain clean. Let dry completely, and then apply a stain, if you want to change the color. If not, apply a good wood sealer, followed by either tung oil, Linspeed oil, or if you prefer a nice satin finish, use Brownells Boiled Lin Seed Oil, but be aware, it takes a long time to dry, and it takes a lot of coats to build up a nice finish that is completely water proof. The result is definately worth it, tho. As you apply coats, use higher grades of steel wool, or wet-or-dry sand paper. Finishing with 0000 steel wool, or 800 grit paper.

    For a very durable finish you might try sanding with 220 grit paper to remove all the old finish. Then fill the grain with acraglas, at least three coats sanding with finer grade papers between coats 400, 600, and finally 4xxx steel wool. Then any good polyurathane, gloss or satin. It will stand a lot of handling and abuse.
