Black Powder Shooters

I just bought a Pietta black powder New Army Police (36 Caliber) revolver.

What are your opinions on the best powder, caps and seals. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You.

Just use about any kind of FF or FFF powder. I'd stick to lead swagged balls and lubed patches, throw some bore butter on top of the chambers after they are loaded if you want but if you use lubed patches and seat your ball pretty good the odds of a chain fire are pretty nil. As far as caps go...#10 or #11, whichever.

Let me add a little bit if I may to the excellent answers you have already received. In a 36 I would use FFF but FF will work as well. For accuracy purposes put your powder in then put a wonder wad on top of the powder. On top of the wonder wad add 3 to 8 grains or cream of wheat or grits (filler) then seat the ball on top of the filler. Be careful to not use too much filler that the ball sticks out past the end of the cylinder. What the filler does is bring the ball closer to the barrel thus elminating any gap between the ball and barrel. This allows less play in bullit to barrel travel. You will be suprised as to how much it will effect accuracy. I do it in my 58 Remington 44 repro with excellent results. Also as to adding grease or bore butter on the end of the cylinder, it does help in keeping down the fowling in the barrel! I was taught these tricks by a gentleman who has been shooting BP revolvers since before I was born, 43+ years ago! Some of the kids in our 4-H shooting team use pistol pyrodex but I have never tried it. One of our kids placed 3rd in BP pistol in the 12 to 15 age class in the KY state 4-H shoot this year and he uses the pyrodex, wonder wads, filler(cream of wheat), bore butter, and round ball. He shoots a 58 Remington 44 repro as well. As to caps, if it has size 10 nipples in it I would purchase size 11 nipples to replace the size 10s because size 11 caps are much easier to find. if you get a properly seating diameter ball..the risk of chain fire even with out the lube is nill...make sure your ball when you ram it...cuts off a small thin circle of lead as it is pushed into the cylinder...use 3 f.. with no 10. caps.remingtons work good or cci's........i never have used wads with mine...no reason to..if your cylinder lines up properly with the barrel ..no reason to have the ball seated at the very end of the cylinder...i use 50/50 bees wax and crico combo for the lube...once the gun heats up or it is warm out...the plain crisco gets too runny

Thank you to one and all. I'm looking forward to firing my black powder revolver. I have fired black powder rifles, but this is my first revolver.

I appreciate your advice and suggestions and will follow them to a tee, so as not to lose a limb, LOL.
