Remington 40X or 40 XB ??

I just acquired a Remington Target rifle with a Redfield 4x--12X scope on it and the barrel is marked 6mm and the model number stamped on it is 40X. All the info I can get in the Blue Book says that the 40x is in 22cal while the 40 XB Rangemaster Centerfire came in 15 calibers between 220 swift and 300 win Mag. According to the serial number 3xxxxB the guns year of mfg is coded as 1955 and the XB is listed as being made starting in 1964. I also have the box for this gun that has 40 XB labels etc and 6mm written onto it on the ID label

Got any ideas about WHICH GUN I have and or do you think it was a return to factory for refit in the 64-74 era to the 6mm caliber and thus the box when it was returned from the factoory?? Would this be anything speciasl if it is in fact the "ODD BALL"? Gun metal is near 90+ while the wood has heat checking in varnish from case marks or???

  I sure don't know what to tell ya about the gun, except that if you decide to sell it let me know... A 40x in 6mm, that's what I've been wanting! I don't have the cash but I'd probably sell something to get one if I had to.

  I also have a 40x in 22-250 It is my under standing. The 40x you have most likely came out of Rem. custom shop. If its been tuned you will have a 1 hole gun!
