45ACP 's ???
I am thinking about purchasing a 45 acp pistol (again). In the past I have had a Springfield and a Colt. Anybody out there own and have experience with the Smith & Wesson model SW1911 stainless 45acp? I have heard some positive things, but very limited. How is the accuracy and in particular, the trigger? Can modifications be made to the gun as easily as the Colt and others? How does the S&W compare to a comparable Kimber? Thank you very much in advance for your help!

The reason you haven't heard much about the S&W 945 is there are very few of them around ... The one example I've see was stainless and exquisite. Keep in mind, this was a custom shop gun ... to compare with a Kimber, apples to apples - you'd have to compare to a "Kimber Gold Match"

I'm not impressed.
However, I would pay $600 for one.
Also, if you're a collector, you might pay retail for one, because I don't believe they will be around for long. Maybe 3 years. After they are gone, everyone will tell each other what wonderful firearms they were and how super much they are worth.
I was the proud owner of an S&W 745. What... you never heard of Smith's first attempt at a large frame, single action .45ACP.

I've got an SW1911. Got it, got it got it!!! It took six months of continually pestering two of the Nation's largest distributors until one of them finally came through. [:p]I absolutely love it! However, like a beautiful new car, it did not come without its difficulties. I'll elaborate: The first time I took it shooting I found the grip safety was difficult to depress sufficiently for reliability. About half the time it wouldn't fire when I pulled the trigger. I thought this odd, because it comes with a "memory hump" safety. Later I analyzied the problem, and discovered that the black rubber grips that it is sold with are of the ultra-thin type. I replaced them with a nice pair of fancy-figured smooth walnut grips of standard thickness and suddenly it worked perfectly every pull of the trigger. This may have been due to the shape of my hands, as I can't believe that the factory didn't consider it functional before shipping. At first I had thought that I would solve the problem by replacing the memory hump safety with the standard smooth model, and that that would allow me to depress it a little further; but the change in grips proved to be the answer. Next time out the pistol proved very accurate and completely reliable; but wouldn't you know it--now there is a recall involving the firing pin safety plunger and my specimen is in the serial number range being recalled. [:(] Greed, I guess, has its price.[}:)] But, I like this pistol so much (and personally had no trouble with the firing pin safety) that I haven't been able to bring myself around to letting go of it temporarily. As for the rest of your question, speaking as a gunsmith who has done a wee bit of 1911 work, there is virtually no difference between the SW1911 and the classic 1911-type, other than the extractor which is probably an improvement over the original. It is fully capable of being customized, but already comes with most of the bells and whistles. I am going to hedge my answer just a little by saying that Colt currently is turning out a fine pistol, and Kimber always has. I own a couple of the newer Colts, but have never yet acquired a Kimber. Ahhhh---so many guns, so little time! You'll be well armed with any of the three you've mentioned. My SW1911 is a keeper![^] 0 -

Its really too bad S&W didn't stay with the fish scale looking texture for their cocking serrations instead of going the way of everyone else with the straight cuts ... that really set them apart [;)]

Ive shot springfields and kimbers and colts and i bought a wilson and the wilson beats them all hands down however they are a bit on the pricey side but you can get pretty good deals on the auction.my protector lists for 2200 in the wilson cat. but i paid 1700 on the auction

I just shot a S&W 1911 friday, it was a brand new gun. we had four 1911's out there all together, the smith, two springfields' and a Kimber TLE II, the Kimber was also almost new. I was unimpressed with the smith overall, but it had some nice stuff, comes with wilson combat mags, and novak sights... I'd spend the money on the Kimber, although the best shooter all day was the Browning hi-power, in .40 0 -
One more Government model .45...like the world needs another! Join the 21 first century (or at least the 20th) and purchase a SIG/Sauer P220. Out of 100+ handguns I own exactly two .45 caliber pistols: one is a Swiss target pistol from Oerilikon and the other is a P220- it won't let you down.

There are lots of 1911s out there. I guess it all depends on your budget and your taste. Smith priced it out of my "budget" arena, and as for my "taste", I don't care for it's looks. It appears that there are some functional and reliability problems, also, according to DG's post. I wonder if S&W is picking up the tab for 2 way overnight delivery???
bigbee - what's your budget for a 1911? If it's in the range of a new Smith, I'd look at a Kimber or one of the customs from Brown, Wilson, etc. If your budget is lower, Springfield and Colt. And... there are dozens out there to chose from between $350 (new) and $3,000.
I've had Colts, Springfields and Smiths(745). Also some of the D/A-S/A .45 autos. You need to go see, touch and feel a bunch of them to make a choice that fits you, personally.
