#1 why is this called a kit gun ?

#2 What is it worth ? The handgun has a 4-inch bbl. , adj. rear sights , ramp front and finished in stainless steel. Special features Fine engraving in semi-relief scrollwork , grips are made of buffalo horn and a presentation box with the Smith & Wesson logo on top and embroiered into padding on inside of box door. The box looks like its made of Walnut and there are some tools in the box. The gun looks unfired.

  I have been told that they are called "kit" guns, because they were handy little irons that you would throw in your fishing kit, camping kit or survival kit.
  
  I'm sure one of the members will be able to give you an approximate value. This sounds like a particularly nice one - probably NOT one you'd put into your tool kit, wrapped up with a bunch or wrenches!!

  The value of fancy engraved guns is difficult to determine; the only SURE way to find the value is to offer it at auction, & even that only tells you what it is worth to a single person on that particular day.
  
  If you have documentation that the gun was engraved by S&W's custom shop, & that it was shipped with all the accessories, that would certainly enhance the value. If you don't have that, it would worth your while to pay S&W for documentation.

  Thanks for the help, I have some documents with the gun but nothing from the custom shop . I will contact S&W for the documentation and you will see it soon on GUNBROKER
