AK Drum Loading
I just got a 75 top loading drum. What the hell does it take to load it properly. What is that lever used for? Any assistance/tips would be appreciated.

Had a guy show me "How To" at a Gunshow about a month ago......You hold the lever down and insert a round into the top like loading a regular magazine. Release the lever and get another round. then push down the lever and insert the second round. Release the lever and get another round, then push down the lever and insert round number three...... Continue until it's full!
Then when you get it loaded, you might begin to worry about the spring "weakening" under full tension if you leave it fully loaded for a period of time....... Probably best to count out 75 rounds and check the count BEFORE you begin loading......easy to forget how many is in there. Myself, I wouldn't want to "short load" it or try to put in too many for that matter......
The Chinese Drums are much easier......Just fill all the slots, Shut the Door and leave it until you need it. Grab it, Insert it, Wind it and enjoy!!!!! Hope that this is a little help to you. Good Luck

Like RP said; although, you will be "pulling up" on the lever to compress the spring and load the next round (rather than the "push-down" description RP gives).
I'll also add that on the two Romanian top-loading drums I have, some of the metal edges inside were rough enough to actually "cut" into the ammo causing extreme friction--making loading almost impossible. After disassembly, using fine sand paper to smooth the edges and lubricating with teflon, I've gotten them to load better. The process still results in sore fingers. I prefer the Chinese design drum.0 -

Yep, I "blew" that! But, I have always "done it my way!" It depends on whether you have it laying on the table in front of you and whether or not the top of the mag where the rounds appear is "closest" to you or "farthest" away from you. That determines which way you "push down" or "pull up".... Hahahahaha! However, if you hold it on edge like standing up in the same position as when inserted into the gun......PULL UP!....... Sorry about that......!! Boy, this can get complicated!
Back to the Chinese drums.....!!!!

Getting back to JJCE11's question: I've found a good way to hold the drum is with the top (the extension portion) facing up. Keep the lever facing your right hand. Extend your thumb of your right hand to loop around the top extension and let the fingers of you right hand wrap around the lever. It then is a squeezing action between your thumb and the lever which compresses the spring and allows for a round to be inserted (using your left hand) into the top. The "trick" is to use the ratchet action (squeezing and releasing with your right hand) and load one round at a time.0 -
