ranger .22cal info?
i just picked up a ranger .22cal s-l-lr-m34,the gun looks fairly old but i cant seem to find any good info on the web. does anyone know anything about this model, what its worth. the gun itself is in perfect working order with very few dings or bad spots on it. neat little plinker!

Looks like your rifle is a Marlin model 80. Condition would decide the value, but it is not a high value piece, about $50-75.

These were made for Sears by most all the major manufacturers in the 30's ... I gave $60 for mine.
... I've got an M34 too, a great little shooter.

'taint a Model 80, 'tis a model 34. This was Marlin's first bolt action rifle, made in the mid-30's. As far as I can tell, it was only marketed under the "Ranger" name, not Marlin. Have one, and have seen several others; all the same as the picture. Nice shooters, still good after 70 years. 0 -

So were they sold through Sears, or was this just a common Hardware & General store item ... back in the day?
I found mine at a gun show, the stock had been cut down for a person with a small frame, but I found an original stock on eday for $15 - I bought this intending it to be my daughters first rifle, however I think it's a bit long for her, even with cut down stock ... so the excuse search continues ... [:D]

KK- don't know much about the marketing. The "Ranger" name has been used by Sears on various .22 rifles from Marlin and Stevens, maybe others.
I will check Brophy's book on Marlin Firearms to see if there is any more info on the marketing aspect of this rifle. Ususally he only lists the dates of manufacture and the number sold, as well as variations.0 -
j2k22 - Thanks for the effort, its not a big deal but kinda nice to know.
skidlid - This model has a rear peep sight but the appature is missing (I modified a old Holly carbuator jet for it ... it works) and the front is a hooded peep.

kimberkid, here is a pic of my model 34. as you can see the trigger gaurd and front sight are slightly different, it must be a different year?
