Your shotgun would have to predate 1959. After that date all production and distrbution of firearms, made in the Suhl district of the DDR was controlled by Waffenfabrik "Ernst Thalmann". Which was a East German state run organization. The Merkel and Simson names were the only ones used on sporting firearms after that date.

I am going to guess that Vorm is a persons name, although I have no idea who's. While I am not a native speaker, I do not believe that the word "vorm" exists in the German language as other than a proper noun. The word for success in German is "erfolg" so the word for successor should be "nachfolgerin", although I believe there may be a gender issue involved here since German is a highly structured language with hard fast rules.

Ernst Thalmann was of course the President of the German Communist Party who received 13% and 10% of the votes in two 1932 elections against Hindenburg and Hitler's NAZI Party. He was pretty much a forgotten figure in Germany after the Nazi's outlawed the Communist Party, but the post war East German Government chose to lionize him and a number of other "has Been" communist/socialist party hacks. After the fall of the wall Ernst regained his former status in Germany as a forgotten political figure remembered now only by those in the former Eastern Zone who long for the good old days.

    FYI,

I received a reply elsewhere regarding my inquiry on Vorm. Sauer Suhl.

Vormals in English means Former. So my gun was made at the former Sauer plant in Suhl after the war when the plant was confiscated by the communists. Rolf Sauer reestablished his company in West Germany.
