Ruger vs SW
While looking a Smith 629 and a Ruger GP-100 in 44 mag, I was told that both could use a trigger job and different springs. My question is after a good trigger job will the Ruger trigger be as good as the Smith?
I had a Smith model 27 and question if the new model's trigger will be as good.
Also you can use 44 specials for practice?

The Ruger will be the stronger of the the two. The S&W will be the smoother of the two. My 2 cents [8D]

I think you are referring to the Redhawk/Super Redhawk for the Ruger. A trigger job usually includes a spring change. FWIW, the last Super Redhawk I tried didn't seem to need a trigger job at all. The new Smiths usually need a bit of smoothing and lighter action.
I consider a trigger job practically part of the purchase price of most guns.

Both my Super Redhawk (44 Mag) and GP-100 357 Mag) benefited greatly from a first class trigger job (and a Bullseye spring kit). Both are significantly better than any Smith out-of-the-box. My GP has a double-action pull just under 3 lbs, and a single action pull at 22 ounces... it is the slickest DA I have ever owned or handled.
BTW... unless Ruger has changed their product line recently, the GP-100 is not offered in 44 Mag (frame is not large enough for the cartridge).

Well, I wish they'd get off their butts and make the flippin' frame big enough to offer a GP-100-style revolver in .44 Magnum! The magnums they (Ruger) make now are the butt-ugliest pistols I've ever seen. Blocky, esthetically unappealing...Tough and reliable, I grant you, but still BUTT-UGLY.

I own both Smith & Ruger,it is my opinion Ruger will never outclass good old Smith & Wesson.

Thanks for the replies, and yes I got my Ruger models mixed up. I am still leaning to the Smith because I find trigger action crucial for having any kind of accuracy.

Having sold both for many years and owning both, I find that SW will tune better for smoothness of action, but the Ruger is the stronger of the two.
If you go strictly factory or SAAMI specs on your reloads, either should serve you well.0 -
the smith is good and you wont go wrong, but I personally like the ruger better myself. 0 -
Ruger - cast frame. Smith - forged frame. Ruger - needs trigger job. Smith - doesn't. Ruger - ugly. Smith - pretty. Ruger - stronger, bulkier. Smith - lighter, slimmer.
Also, some years ago, Bill Ruger sent a letter to the Congress (both houses) advocating the banning of all magazines of over 10 rounds capacity. The letter was printed in Shooting Times magazine. Seems to me that that guy got rich from all of us, then stabbed us in the back. This seems to be all but forgotten by the shooting community.
I will NEVER buy a new Ruger.

I have owned both a S&W 629 and the super blackhawk. If you want accuracy go with the blackhawk. I fired the same batch of handloads out of both guns through a chrono, Blackhawk would get as much as 200fps more speed out of same load. Blackhawk has 7 1/2 inch barrel, 629 had 8 3/8. Not certain how much barrel length played in the difference, but space between cylinder and barrel is almost double between the 629 and the ruger. 0
