To those MORE knowledgable than I...can recent ( 20-30 yrs) ammo be used in a 1906 vintage 97 ? 16 gauge ...thanks

No... not unless the forcing cone has been relieved for the longer 2 3/4" shells. All of the earlier Model 1897 16 gauge shotguns (until 1931) were chambered for 2 5/8 2 9/16" shells.

Actually, Winchester's early guns, in 16ga. were chambered for 2 9/16s shells, 20ga 2 1/2 in. shells, and 12 ga was 2 5/8. In 1899 they went to the long chamber in there 12 ga, 2 and 3/4. You can still buy today shells for your 16 ga. gun in 2 9/16's. Have your local gunsmith check the gun out , remember this gun is almost 100 years old and if it's loose this could be a big problem. There are some adjustments that can be made such as the barrel adjusment by taking up on the chamber ring. You may want to look under collectable ammo here at GB for your shells. I've picked up some 20ga ammo in 2 1/2, and 16ga in 2 9/16s made in the 1950's by Winchester and Western. I've used it in my Md 12s. Look for ammo in excelent condition, examine it closely to insure it never got wet , (Paper shells swell) I've had no problems. Regards Dave
