Mini 14 or 30?
first i was looking into a AR 15, but then i hear that they jam a lot and that they are a pain to clean. does anyone hear prefer a mini 14 or 30? if so which one is better?

I own two Colt AR-15's and have never had a malfunction. I also have a Mini-14 that has only malfunctioned once, and that was because of the plastic magazine I was using. To me an AR-15 is easy to clean, actually easier to break down than a Mini-14. I haven't had much experience with the Mini-30, but it is just like the Mini-14 except for the caliber. As far as saving some money, you can buy a Mini-14 without breaking the bank. A Mini-14 is not going to break any accuracy records, but it is accurate enough for all-around shooting. I would recommend either an AR-15 or a Mini-14, it's really just a matter of how much you want to spend.

Sp Tiger is right on about what he says about both rifles.
A mini-14 isn't the most accurate but is ok to grab in a hurry and dump the mag at any coyote raiding your chicken coupand will run about $450.00
AR-15 type rifles are far more superior and will run a few hundered dollars more than the mini-14. There are alot of companies out there making AR type rifles other than Colt. DPMS, Olympic,and Bushmaster to name a few. You won't go wrong with a Bushmaster, I know alot of people that own them and like them.

I have owned both AR-15s and a Mini-30. They are both great guns. The AR is much easier to clean and are incredibly accurate. The Mini-30 is not quite as accurate as the AR, but I believe it makes up for it in shootability. I love shooting my MINI-30! Using the iron sights i've found it easy to make fairly accurate shots out to 100-175 yards offhand. Maybe the gun just fits me well, but ,in a pinch, I would choose it over my AR any day. Also, I like the caliber of the MINI-30(7.62X39) over the Mini-14 (.223). Since I don't scope my rifle I like the combination of easy medium range shooter w/ a heavier bullet. If I was going to scope the rifle I would choose the .223 as it is arguably more accurate at longer distances. And if you are wanting a distance paper shooter the AR w/ a heavy barrel is the hands down winner. For me though, the MINI-30 would be my choice for coyotes, deer, and just plain fun. OH, and P.S. AR-15s rarely jam unless severly negleted or using cheap clips. My Mini-30 never jams either. 0 -

Don't buy the Mini 14/30. There are much better things out there. I've been shooting AR's on and off for the last 10yrs now, (jeeze I'm getting old) with out a problem. That "AR's always jam" theory is totally BS in my experience. I had more troubles with a Mini 14 I had. That gun would only feed the factory standard 5rd magazines. Other mags would cause it to stovepipe. I tried a bunch of other higher cap mags for it to no success & refuse to buy factory mags that cost more than the gun.
You can put together an AR for about $620. I think you would enjoy that investment much more.
Concerning the Mini 30. I haven't owned one but I think you enjoy an AK much more. Just my $.02.

Imagine how much ammo you could buy for thhe price difference between the Mini and the AR - typically you'll spend at least $350 more on a good AR, from what I've learned on this board.
