38 sp in a 38 largo

Just wondering what the difference is in the largo vs the special. Is it possible (safe) to shoot a 38 special in a revolver marked 38 largo? Thanks in advance, this is a great site!!

  Who made it? What do all the markings say? (if you want use a x for the last 2-3# in the SN)
  None of my referances show a 38 Largo, however there is a 9mm Largo, which is a autoloader cartridge not a revolver cartridge.
  
  9mm Largo case length/type .905 rimless, bullet dia .355,
  38 Super case length/type .900 rimless, bullet dia .355
  38 S&W case length/type .775 rimmed, bullet dia .359
  38 Special case length/type 1.155 rimmed, bullet dia .357
  
  There's others, but those are the most common ones. One thing, the 38Super is a hot cartridge, and you probably don't want to use it without knowing more about your gun.

  As long as you are talking about .38 Largo and not 9mm Largo. These two are NOT interchangable.
  
  Some Spanish made revolvers are marked 38 Largo and and these were made for the 38 Colt Long of yesteryear.
  
  38 Special MAY fit, but there may be some question as to the fitness of the particular weapon. The .38 Colt Long is a old cartridge not up to the power of the .38 S&W Special. Only a qualified person examining the weapon should make that call.

  Yes, skyking, this is a spanish made revolver. It's an Orbea, and its not mine yet. I came across 3 for sale. Just wondering if it could be shootable with modern ammo. They all seem to function flawless, and are in at least 70% condition overall. I know that with the pressures that modern loads are reaching that it could create a BIG problem. So seeing as though it might just be a wall hanger, anyone think its worth $150? Its pretty old from what I can tell the company went out of business in 1939. Thanks for the fast response, you guys are great.

  I think you'll find the .38 Largo is Black Powder.If it is, don't shoot a .38 spl.in it. KABOOM !!!!!!!!!
