What is 45 HP
I bought a Colt Lightweight Officer's model 45 at the gun show last weekend. When I got home I noticed that the barrel is marked Colt 45 HP. When I went back the next day the guy I bought it from was not set up that day. I looked at all the other Colt Officer's Models and the barrels were all marked Colt 45 acp. Is this the same caliber? According to my "Cartridges Of The World" the 45 HP is a loophole cartridge for those unfortunate souls, who live in countries that prohibit their residents having handguns that fire "MILTARY" ammo.
It's 1 milleter/.040 shorter then the conventional .45 acp, but loaded to similar velocities.
Your barrel if it hasn't been rechambered won't function with regular .45 acp.
I wouldn't be in any hurry to rechamber or sell that barrel as the pistol MIGHT have some collectors value. Doubt that there is many Lightweight Officers Models with Colt marked 45 HP barrels on this side of the pond. There might be a collector who would covet it?

rufe-snow, thanks for the info. I actually bought it to use as a concealed carry gun. I wanted to replace my Detonics Combat Master with a lightweight. I think i will just hold on to the Colt and see how many others i see. 0 -
Just curious, how close to the new 45Glock round is the 45HP (the casing anyway)?
Thinking about a possable brass source for his HP

Pretty close, if you can trust the info that's available on the net. The cartridge case length of the .45 Glock is only supposed to be .5 mm less then the .45 HP, that something like .020.
Kind of makes you wonder why Gaston went to all the trouble? He had a cartridge that was already in use and available in Europe i.e. the .45 HP. Then he brings out a pistol chambered for one thats slightly shorter, and probably not interchangeable, go figure?0
