crack or scratch??
i have a s&w model 49 body guard there is a line running from inside the frame to the out side to the trigger guard how could i tell if it is a scratch or a crack in the frame it is a steel frame many thanks

I would talk to local machine shops about having it magnifluxed. Simple proceedure and shouldn't cost too much. Good luck!

If you don't do so well finding a machine shop with this equipment
look up magnetic particle inspection or nondestructive testing in a business index. Test labs,engine rebuilders and aircraft repair stations should have it.
I would be surprised if you found it to be a crack as S&W and Colt use steel forgings which are very tough. They should show a lot of distortion before failure.
If it does prove to be a crack S&W should make good on a new frame.0 -
Sometimes the "poor man's Magnaflux" can be done with a solvent. Put the solvent on the areas of the crack, wipe it off, and immediately tap the frame with a piece of wood or the like. Sometimes that will reveal a crack that will then release some of the solvent.
A crack as described seems VERY unlikely to me. I would guess it is a scratch, although how such a scratch could have been made seems almost impossible unless intentional.0 -
I have a Model 49....tough, sweet little gun. I doubt if it's a crack, but I agree....get it magnafluxed just to be on the safe side. 0 -

how would the line on the side plate run, from where to where?? thanks 0 -
Most revolvers that aren't Rugers have a sideplate on the right side, (looking through the sights).
This sideplate covers the area above, and to the rear of the trigger guard, and usually ends up at the top of the grip frame. It covers the action, trigger springs, etc. and holds the whole mess together.
Ruger thought the sideplate was inherently a weaker design due to the interruption of the metals' grain in an area subject to considerable force, plus they look better!
The sideplate can sometimes be very finely matched, or look like a gap between two surfaces.

Giving the poster the benefit of the doubt, I assumed that the poster could NOT POSSIBLY be mistaking the side plate line for a crack. Again, assuming makes an ass out of you and me. Jeeze! 0 -

If it will make you feel any better I made almost that same mistake just a few days ago. I bought a used North American arms Black Widow revolver & on lloking at it I saw what appeared to be a crack on the bottom of the extension below the barrel.
It took a very good magnifing glass & strong light to see that the "crack" actually ran in a straight line all the way around the barrel. What looks to be a one piece barrel & frame is actually a screwed in barrel.0
