can a single action pistol marked 22 mag safely fire 22lr shells?

Only if you have a separate cylinder for 22LR. The 22 mag chambers are larger in diameter than 22LR chambers by .003" and you risk a ruptured case if you shoot the 22LR. 0 -
Dont try it. It might work, but its not safe. The 22 mag is a little larger diameter case than the 22LR.
You may end up damaging your gun and yourself with excessive blow- back of gases from shooting smaller shells in a larger diameter chamber.

In an emergency you can. The smaller diameter case may swell or a longintudinal crack may develop but by and large your chances to suffer damage or injury is small.
A steady diet of LR in a magnum weapon will cause a build up of residue in the chamber causing magnum cases to bind. This should be removed prior to reintroducing magnum cartridges.

There's a difference of between .015 and .020 between the rim and base diameters of the .22 LR and the .22 wmr. Last time I tried it in a Hi-Standard .22 Mag. Derringer, the only way I could get the.22lr to work at all, was to wrap a little scotch tape around the cartridge case, even then it wasn't 100% reliable.
It seemed that the firing pin wasn't making proper contact with the rim to set off the priming compound.0 -
Ya'll might think I'm crazy but I have done this in my Ruger
Single Six....Take a handful of .22 mag spent shells, cut the
rim off with a file, now you have a "sleeve", slide a .22 lr. into
the mouth of the .22 mag. Load into your revolver or single shot.
Sometimes you can reuse the "sleeve" if you can push the .22lr out of
it. This is the only safe way you can shoot .22lr from a .22 magnum.
Just save your .22 mag. brass. This process has been tested, it is effective.0 -

I have done the same thing, just to test the idea. Also, if you had a gun such as a Colt Police Positive, in .22 WRF. you could use the sleeve system in it. A way of cheaply firing a rarely used gun.

Just last week, I accidently loaded up the magnum cylinder with .22lr. It shot fine and ejected the spent cases fine. I discovered the problem when I switched cylinders to shoot .22 mags and they wouldn't go in!! Felt like an idiot and also felt lucky that I didn't get a faceful of gas and brass.
I have now clearly marked the cylinders.

I have a .22 HR 676 revolver with the two cylinders. One thing I notice is that it shoots better with magnum ammo as the mag ammo is slightly larger in diameter than the regular .22, no?
