IS it possible
This may be a rediculous question but here goes. Could one paint a pistol frame and cylinder? A matte finished revolver of course with high temp paint professionaly sprayed. I told my girl "sure I'll buy you a pink gun, if I ever find one" Just a thought, I did'nt know if it is was even possible. Thanks.

I have a TURK Mauser I want to rebarrel. I have a tap for the 1"x12tpi In my shop. Can I just tap the reciever threads for the large ring Mauser?

DENWA--The barrel shank for a large ring Mauser is 1.10 inches OD and 12 threads/inch, .625 inch long. From your question, I'm guessing that you have a Turk with a .980 inch thread OD, thread pitch 11-1/2 or maybe 12 or maybe something else. (I'm not too familiar with the Turks). If you're going to get a new barrel, order it with the right thread. If you're going to use an old barrel, have the barrel shank modified to the right thread. The 1x12 tap you have is too small for a large ring thread and too large for a small ring. If it were a last-ditch rifle to repel the invaders in defense of the empire, you could maybe make it work, but probably not without a lot of PITA work.

If I ordered the correct tap, 1.1 x 12 then would it work?
WHY not? I am trying to do every thing my self I do have a full machine shop on hand but I want to do the work my self and what I want to do is put a #3 contour barrel on this pig. Every thing else is looking sweet. new trigger, stock and scope mounts. then I cut and bent the bolt, It looks sweeeet. Lots of polishing and removal of that extra "ring" around the barrel thread. I've already cut the barrel down 5" and recrowned. The thing looks good and shoots great but I hate the 8x57mm. I want to hunt with it this year and it looks like this will be a job for the off season. I am planning ahead and possibly won't wait until then. thanks until then

Simple reason why not, there won't be enough metal left in the receiver ring. BTW, the Turks have a reputation for inconsistancies in heat treat, one will be harder than "woodpecker lips" and the next will be soft as "warm butter"
You don't like the 8x57? Loaded to CIP standards (say Norma ammo) it's equivilant to the 30-06.
Other safe choices would be the 7x57, 257Roberts, etc.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
They are dimensionally same as Large Ring... how will there not be enough metal left? Once the correct threeads are on should it not be exactly the same as any other L.R. Mauser? If I did do this What would be the complications involved? [}:)]

If you were to tap a new thread in an action, the minor diameter should be about .965.
Your action thread is already .980 at the top of the thread, so the new thread wouldn't give you a complete thread.
You would also have a bundle of problems cutting a thread with a tap. Cutting a thread that size would require a really secure grip on the action, probably crushing the ring out of round. Also it would be almost impossible to keep the tap aligned with the bolt face. The outside of the rings are usually hand-finished and may not be exactly concentric with the barrel shank.
Even if you were to cut the thread on the lathe,- single-point, you'd have a hard time lining up the action to be straight with the barrel shank.
I'd use that Turk for something else and start with a good Argentine or equal high quality action and be proud of what you end up with.0 -
Or--why not just order a pre-threaded barrel to fit your action from E.R. Shaw (or comparable) and chamber it for....whatever! And--I'll second the opinion that there is nothing wrong with the 8x57mm. 0 -
You can't lose with the good-quality 8mm Mauser ammo that Sellier & Beillot (Bellot? Belliot? Oh, for Pete's sake) put out; this stuff is VERY accurate, and not very expensive. And there's (apparently) lots of good 8mm to be had out there from outfits like Olympic too. Unless the barrel is shot out or pitted up really bad, leave the beast in 8mm. If you want a Mauser in some other caliber, then try to find a nice Brazilian Model 1908/34 or M954 short rifle in .30-'06, or a Colombian FN Model 1950 short rifle.
There be plenty of 8mm Mauser to go around, though.0 -

Glad to see the light come on in the window...You got a lot of good Information and from a Couple of Real Genuine Experts in the Field......For one...I.SHUTE is one of the best when it comes to Re-Barreling...Not only does he have the Knowledge, Capabilty and Know How...He's got the Shop to go with it!
Der Gebirgsjager is another...Has His own Shop and the experiance to go with it...These are People Known to me and on a First Name Basis..
As far as 8mm and the Price...Check with <J&G Gunsales.com> They're selling 700 Rounds of 8mm for under Thirty Dollars...You can't beat the price...and Thanks Go to the Members of this Forum for they're advice and counsel to DENWA..........
