    Are the c&r license worth the cost and time to get if one just buys or trades a old gun 4-5 times a year? Also how often do you have to renew them? Thanks

    I got one a couple of years ago; and, other than waiting almost 3 months for it, it wasn't a problem. I got a lot of help from www.goldenloki.com which virtually walks you through the process. One other benefit is that many retailers will give a discount to C & R holders. A recent personal example was the purchase of a Marbles Tang Sight which retails for $124 for $84 from Midway.

    I have had a C&R for ten years. It is sure worth it. It saves filling out the paperwork from a dealer and allows interstate shipment. My only gripe is that some dealers won't ship to you even though the gun is eligble. A lot of confusion exists about the "C&R list". A lot of people think that if the gun isn't on the list it doesn't qualify. One guy even told me that the 50 year old rule is only for bolt action rifles. Where do people get this stuff? Can't they read? Dealers in California seem to be the worst about recognizing the C&R.

    If you have even the slightest interest in collecting firearms a C&R is a MUST HAVE and for $30 is a great deal. I've been an FFL dealer for over 20 years and I have a C&R and use it often. The paper work issue is not as big of a hassel as many would lead you to believe, just be sure you keep your records current and remember the C&R only allows you to collect, you are NOT a dealer. People get into trouble if they start using their C&R's to purchase firearms for their friends ("helping them out") from the Shotgun News (even without a fee involved) or on line auctions. This is a MAJOR violation of the regulations.

    I also have had a C & R license for several years... I can not think of ANY negatives for having it, or the $30 initially spent obtaining it. Purchasing old Winchester firearms is significantly much more pleasurable as a result of having the Class 03 license.

    Thanks for your input. I've copied the info from 'goldenloki', and it was very helpful. I just received the application and booklet in the mail Sat.. There was a finger print card with it, but nowhere in the instructions does it tell you that they want you to go get finger printed! Go figure?!

    I'd ordered the C&R application a week or so before I posted the question about the possible hassles. In the mean time, I'd had some 'know-it-alls' tell me that if I had (or even applied for) a C&R license the feds could come into my house at anytime without any reason (no warrant), and tear up the carpet and floorboards, tear down sheet rock, knock down walls, etc., searching for 'contraband', or illegal guns, or just to get their jollies!. Thus the question about being hassled. Obviously, I'd been mis-informed......again. Thanks for some 'real' perspective on the subject.

    My sole reason for wanting the C&R is to collect some old and interesting guns. I have a goal to have one gun for every year I've been alive. I hope to have 50 servicable guns by age 50. (I like 1 to 1 ratios)! I'm about 6 guns shy right now. I've developed an interest in Win. 1892's and 1894's, especially in the less common calibers, and preferably from the 1890's to very early 1900's, i.e., 1904-5 etc.. So far I have 7 Winchester lever guns. The oldest is a 1894 that was built in 1894, in .38-55 caliber, octagon barrel. It's in fairly lousy shape, but it IS the first year of production. Also a .25-35 SRC from 1899, real nice condition. There's a 1892 in .25-20 from 1904, oct. barrel, in about 90-95% condition, beautiful bluing, nice wood, all original. Was checked out by a gunsmith who's an expert on Winchesters, and he drooled over it. Said it's one of the nicest ones he's seen.

    Anyway...Thanks for your help and advice. The C&R application will be sent in this week.
