I am having trouble with a Model 742 that wont engage the hammer and sear for the second shot. I can cycle rounds throught it manually and the sear engages every time, Load the mag up, chamber a round, fire... and the second round chambers no problem, but the hammer is not engaged. When I drop the magazine out, the hammer is disingaged resting in the forward position. I have tried short pull/long pull--- slow cycle/fast cycle without live ammo and the sear engages everytime. Any ideas?? I also have compleatly stripped and cleaned/lubed so I am not thinking this is the problem. 0 -

Look on the left side of the barrel,
just in front of the receiver.There
should be a two or three digit code.
That is the date of manufacture code.
Post it and I'm sure your question will
be answered promptly.

there is a 5 digit somethin there, it is printed X xi41, but the i i printed is not what it looks like, it does not have the dot above the i.

All of the different variations of the Model 742s were manufactured between 1960 - 1980. The specific month & year when yours was made can be determined by looking for the two letter code stamped on the left side of the barrel near the frame. I do not know what the five digit stamp is that you are referring to, but it is not the date code.

Those digits that i posted above are exactly what is located on the left side of the BARRELL . There is the big X then the little x then the other letter of which i do not have on my keyboard then the 41 . that is all there is except up around the backsite it says Remington Arms Co. Inc. Ilion, N.Y. Made in U.S.A pat number-2,747,313 6MM REM. Thats all folks, there is absolutely nothing else anywhere on the barrel. SO i would have to assume that a person would have to use the 41 if you are only looking for a 2 digit #. I dont have any other information. 0 -

Unfortunately, I am currently on a longterm (18 month) work assignment in the Anaheim, CA area, and my home (and more importantly, my firearms collection) is in Washington state. The good news, is that I only have 7 months left to go down here in the P.R.K.
Anyhow, I own a 150th Anniversary Model 742, but I can't just go pick it up and tell you preceisely where Remington placed the D.O.M. stamp code (I will be returning home to WA in both November & December (during the holidays), and if I remember to do it, I will take a look at mine). It has been my experience (and I own a dozen or so Remingtons of different types) that the date code is stamped on the left side of the barrel near the frame. However, that doesn't mean that it might not be located somewhere else on the Model 742 (or it could be hidden by the forestock). One thing is for sure... the "41" has nothing to do with the D.O.M. If both of those "X's" you mention were of the same size, then that would be correct, and it would indicate a D.O.M. of December, 1973 (which is in the correct date range for this model).

Bert , thanks for the info. THe x's are different size thats for sure. But i did a thorough search of the whole gun, there isnt anything else on the gun. The right side of the gun has a stamp with a circle around it ,but it appears to say REP as best as i can make it out. Sorry if i have bothered you with this!!
