Winchester 42 pump .410?
This is a pretty old gun, I assume. I was wondering, there are some scratches and dings on the wood and reciever, and it won't eject the spent shell. Whatever it is that ejects the spent shell does not work. Though it will shoot one at a time. I want to take it to a gunsmith to get it fixed, but will it be worth it for such an old gun?

Definately worth the fix. I'm not familiar with this gun but sounds like a stuck extractor or the ejector tang is broken or missing. find a 'smith who is familiar with winchesters and I think he'll set you right as new for a few bucks.
If we can believe the Blue Book, even a "beater" field grade should be worth from $600 to $800 (60 to 80% condition). I know they have had an increased interest in them the last few years, so definately, you've got something absolutely worth putting some bucks into to get her up and running right.0 -
I agree with "allechalley" even a beater is woth a min of $500. if for noting else, parts. Winchester only made about 164000 of these little beauties between 1933 and 1965, when the last one was shipped. Great gun, I would fix the mechanical problem. However I would not do any other restoration. The money you spend on that will never be recovered in resale (my opion). Few guns increase in value from restoration and thus not worth the money spent. Most people want original gun. A 70% original gun is probably worth more than 100% restored gun. 0 -
This is just a shade off-topic but I thought the .410 posters here might like to hear this. Three or four weeks ago someone had a classified ad in the Times-Picayune (New Orleans) for a Mod 42. The ad said it was "an older gun but shoots fine" and was listed for $100.00. My paper gets thrown at the house about 5:45AM and I called the ad number immediately. He said he was sorry but someone else had just called him and was headed his way but he would call me back if the fella didn't like it.

I agree with the others. The model 42 Winchester was the first pump gun made for a .410. They came in 2 1/2 inch and 3 inch chambers from 1933-63. Approx. 160,000 were made. I own two and love to shoot them.[:p] 0
