Shepherd or IOR scope?
I'm stuck betweed two scopes a shepherd 6-18x-40 and and IOR 4-14x-50. With those of you that are familiar with them the IOR has an MP-8 reticle. Just wanted to see if any of you have used them and prefer one over the other or have some insight on either scope, good or bad. Thanks

IOR is head and shoulders above. The glass is better,.and the adjustment is superior. I use the Nightforce R2 reticle and the MP8 is very similar. I have an IOR in my near future after one of the best shooters on the IBS circuit showed me his on his heavy gun at the Quantico nationals. The shepard is a man/game hitting scope,.while the IOR is a target capable scope. The IOR is the better choice.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Although you did not say what you were going to use it for, I prefer the 4-14 power range. That power range is just more useful.

As Boomerang wrote, the intended application is still a mystery.
If leaning to a hunting application, and want one of the most simpliest accurate range finder AND bullet drop compensation systems (there are only two) Shepherd has it hands down.
To use the MP8 reticle your going to have to convert back & forth between meters & yards. You will both range & use the BDC in meters. If your not skilled, mathematically adept, carry a drop chart book that you must/will make, and/or a calculator with you, the Shepherd is just alot easier.
It's alot easier to see also.

As far as the glass goes, I wouldn't bet your life that either one is better. If I did, I'd be guilty of murder.
The IOR will on paper seem brighter due to the exit pupil size, and Realtive Brightness formula, but that doesn't mean things are sharper, or more resolute.
The Shepherd is built by one of the very, very best optics houses in Japan. A major world class quality company.
A major maker in the long range scope business (the best IMHO)is the same company that builds Shepherd.
There has been for years a misconception that western Europe builds the best optics. Just like the luxury car business (high end audio, video, even firearms), the Japanese car makers raised the bar for the Germans. Just ask Mercedes or BMW about Lexus, Acura, on Infinity.
If wanting a more tactical styled scope, with larger, more click style adjustments then the IOR will be a good choice.
Hands down they're both good.

Very informative discussion above. What is the price difference between
the Sheperd and the IOR? If I mainly target shoot a .30 caliber or a .308 do either have problems with the concussion? Thanks.

The Shepherd will stand up to a 50BMG (if I remember right there 22lr scopes stand up on the big 50 also)
The Shepherd is not the way to go for target shooting, it was designed for a completly different purpose (deer arn't the only things that fit a 18" circle)
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

If shooting a common military cartridge; 223, 308, 30-36, and 300 WM,take a good look at the Burris Signature/Black Diamond scopes, with the Burris Ballistic Plex reticle.
It is already calibrated in yards, and for those and other cartridges.
You'll find the optics equaling most Euro's, and much, much easier to use.
Additionally, they're 100% USA components, and made in Colorado.
We do have something to brag about.
