Mini 14 Question

Does anyone know of a source for a mini 14 flash suppressor or muzzle brake combo that fits the 197 series?

    How do I tell if my Mini 14 is preban? It is SS, Marked "Ruger Ranch Rifle .223 Cal" SN 187-616XX

    There really is no such thing as a "preban" Mini-14.

    There were the Ruger Factory pistol-grip and folding stock models and the government model with flash hider and bayonet lug; plus some people (like myself) configured Mini-14s and 30s with aftermarket pistol-grips and folding stocks--these models, if in their configuration prior to the 1994 bill, would be grandfathered as "assault" weapons. These would be considered "preban."

    All other Mini-14s--no matter when they were manufactured--are not "assualt" weapons and cannot now be configured with features making them an "assault" weapon.

    Like competentone said, but I believe your allowed one "evil" feature other than a detachable magazine on a domestic manufactured semi auto. So you could put on a flash hider or a pistol grip stock but not both.

    Notice that new production Springfield M1A's have a flash hider on them but not a bayonet lug.

    So no you can't put a folding stock on it since that would be adding an additional evil feature; Pistol grip, folding stock, detachable magazine, unless you can prove it was that way before the date of the ban.

    To answer your question, some of the SS mini-14's in the 188-xxxxx range were made before the AWB law was passed. Your mini-14 #187-xxxxx should definitly have been mfg'd prior to the AWB passage. If any config was changed prior to the AWB, then you could technically have a "preban" config mini-14. To make sure, you should contact Ruger for a date of Mfg. They will send you a written statement with such info.

    No, they're not (technically), but some overlap their functions so as to, practically speaking, serve both purposes. Best left at that, unless you want them to draw a finer line.

    Actually it kinda depends where your at. See I was talking with my local ATF guy and he was telling me that when they do an investigation the first thing they look at is the serial number. If the serial number shows its production to be before the date of the 94 crime bill then the investigations stops there. He basically told me that if it was made before the crime bill then you can "upgrade" it with all the evil features. Because there is really no way of them proving that it wasn't already in that configuration before the crime bill, and they weren't going to bother waisting time or money trying to do so. Thats here in southeast Texas though. I'm sure it may be a whole lot different in the northeast.
